"The first regiment that landed from the boats at Shiloh, was the Sixth Iowa. It was put in McDowell's brigade, far out to the extreme right, on the Purdy road. No troops were farther forward. Two companies of the Sixth, under Capt. M. M. Walder, afterward Lieutenant governor of Iowa, were still farther advanced, guarding the bridge of the Purdy road over Owl Creek."
  pg 140
"All that night [6 Apr 1862] the army lay in bivouac under a fearful rainstorm, with the federal gunboats furnishing thunder. Monday morning late found the Sixth Iowa at the siege guns, but toward noon it was led to the front - first by Col. Oglesby, and then by Col. James A. Garfield, afterward President of the United States. It passed the Shiloh Church, passed the cavalry, and once, with Garfield directing it, chased a battery that had unlimbered at its front. That battery fired against the Sixth Iowa the last rebel shot at Shiloh"
A tintype picture identified as "Walt Smith I" in his Union infantry uniform is in the possession of Randy Smith of Monterrey, CA in 2000.
Ironic bit of history. Walter's great nephew, Walter Alva Smith, married Ada Elizabeth Rogers in Sullivan County, Missouri. Ada's great uncle, John Rogers, Jr. was in the 6th Iowa Infantry unit with Walter Smith (probably unknown to each other). Walter Smith died at the Battle of Shiloh. John Rogers died of wounds in Altoona, Georgia near the end of the Civil War.
