Note:   James' family history was outlined in this 1883 biography from the History of Amherst County, VA: "James Clements - born in Amherst county, August 4, 1823, and Eliza Jane Allen, born in this county, May 28, 1827, were here joined in wedlock April 29, 1852. Their first child, William T.[I], born January 20, 1853, is deceased; they have ten children living in the county; John A., born June 23, 1854, married Sarah Rhodes; James T., born August 13, 1855; Charles W., born March 20, 1857, married Sarah A. Clements; Mary J., born December 21, 1858, is the wife of A. D. Whitten; Patrick H., born October 9, 1861; Sarah E., July 29, 1863; Lillie B., April 6, 1865; Willie M., July 16, 1867; Joshua P., January 29, 1869; Ann Eliza, November 5, 1871. John and Tabitha (McCloud) Clements, the parents of James, lived in Amherst county until death, and Thomas Allen, his wife's father, died here. Her mother, whose maiden name was Mary G. Tinsley, lives in the county. Mrs. Clements had six brothers who were soldiers of the war between the States in the Southern army: Lieut. T. L., William P., James H., Thomas O., Harrison and D.F. Allen. William P. was killed near Petersburg in 1865; Harrison was killed in the valley campaign in 1863. James Clements put in a substitute, and in the last year of the war served himself in Company F, 51st Virginia Infantry. His father's family came from Lower Virginia to this section of the State. His mother's ancestors were from the Highlands of Scotland. His wife's paternal grandfather, Thomas Allen, came from England, and settled in Amherst county. Her mother's father, Lindsey Tinsley, was born in Amherst county, and moved from this county to Nashville, Tennessee. James Clements owns several farms in this county, containing in all about 750 acres. His postoffice address is Forks of Buffalo, Amherst county, Virginia"
