He was 2 years old and was born in Marsden. At the 1861 census, John was living at Bradley Lane Head, Great Marsden, LAN with his parents and his seven siblings (Charles Titherington - 15, Alice Titherington - 11, Betty Titherington - 9, Mary Titherington - 7, Margaret Titherington - 6, Nanny Titherington - 3 and Sarah Titherington - 1, ). He was 12 years old, a factory worker worsted spinner and was born in Great Marsden. At the 1871 census, John was living at 24 Colne Road, Great Marsden, LAN with his parents and his eight siblings (Alice Titherington - 21, Betty Titherington - 19, Mary Titherington - 17, Margaret Titherington - 16, Nancy Titherington - 13 and Sarah Titherington - 11, William Titherington - 9 and Ellen Titherington - 5). He was 22 years old, a cotton weaver and was born in Nelson. In the 1851 census John carried his mothers previous name Duerden. She also had a son called Charles Duerden. Although she was called Titherington in 1851, her two sons were not. In 1861 John had the surname Titherington. This probably means he was officially adopted. His father may have been John Titherington, or someone completely different.
