Circa 1920. When Roger Gray took his team [horse and wagon] to Machias about every two weeks for groceries, he would stay overnight, at "Stoddard's", which was probably a rooming house. [Note: Steve Robbins saw an old postcard on ebay, of the Eastern Hotel in Machias, and asked Maxine (Gray) Robbins if this might have been where Roger stayed. Maxine replied to Steve in an e-mail, dated 20 July 2005: "Thanks for sending the picture and information about the Machias hotel. After talking with Agnes we agreed that our father, Roger, probably did not stay at the hotel, but we did remember him saying that he had stayed at Stoddard's. This was probably a rooming house."]

 1947 Forest Fires in Maine
 www.washingtoncountymaine.com/images/places/UTHistory.pdf ; accessed 31 July 2017.
  A STORY OF
 THE WASHINGTON COUNTY UNORGANIZED TERRITORIES
Prepared by John Dudley for Washington County Council of Governments
 March 2017
  [deletia]
THE OCTOBER 1947 FOREST FIRES IN TOWNSHIP 19 ED
October 1947 is considered the worst time in Maine forest fire history. A period of 108 days with no measurable rain started in mid-July leaving vegetation, wells, and streams bone dry. October 5th was the first day of Fire Prevention Week in Maine. That day the temperature reached 80 degrees in Bangor and five fires were burning in Washington County, including the Centerville fire. A hundred-acre fire at Bar Harbor had burned all weekend, but was contained. Within hours all that changed when the wind started blowing. Bar Harbor and York County suffered the most and are remembered by many. The Centerville fire eventually consumed 19, 970 acres. Statewide that month, sixteen people lost their lives and 2500 were made homeless. 205,678 acres of forests, fields and pasture were burned.
The Maine fire that burned the most acres was the Miramichi fire of October 7, 1825. There also was a Miramichi fire in New Brunswick on the same day and that is how the Maine fire got its name. The Canadian fire burned forests, farms, and several villages. The Maine Miramichi fire burned 832,000 acres of forestland.
Man starts 80% of the forest fires, and lightning starts the rest. The cause of the Centerville fire was smoking. Of 533 fires in unorganized towns in 1947, 12 were caused by lightning, 109 had unknown origins, and the rest were caused by man.
Forest fire detection and fighting have changed greatly in the past century. Between 1910 and 1920 forest fires averaged 205 acres in size, fifty years later, each fire averaged 2.5 acres. It was in the teens that the state started having lookout towers connected by telephones. By 1947, airplanes were used to spot fires and radio information to the firefighters.
The purpose of this paper is to look at two fires of October 1947 that occurred in Township #19. Unfortunately, the Department of Conservation threw away all the records of all 1947 fires in the mid-eighties, so our official record of these fires is brief. We do have some great memories to share and some memories of other fires at the time.
OFFICIAL RECORD: The Forest Commissioner’s Report for 1947 - 48 states:
Township #19 ED on October 22 a fire started by lightning eventually burned 10 acres. *
Township #19 ED on October 25 a fire started by campfire eventually burned 275 acres. **
Township #19 ED on October 25 a fire started by unknown eventually burned 10 acres. -Nfi-
MEMORIES OF THE #19 FIRES: I thank those who shared these memories. Their names are in bold print. It is amazing how much detail was remembered after a half century. These are much more interesting than the Official Record.
  [deletia]
Austin Gray and a bunch, maybe 15 or 20, from Wesley went over to fight the fire. They were met at Sally Corner in Crawford, and rode on the back of Carleton Davis’s truck down the 19 Road. James Patrick Day, Roger Gray and Richard Hayward (the mailman) were in the group. Lil Polk of East Machias came up the 19 Road from Route 191 with a load of sandwiches for the crew. She wasn’t supposed to be there in a car, the road was quite rough and was reserved for official vehicles. The crew from Wesley hung around most of the day, were fed a corn beef dinner, and went home. Apparently they weren’t needed. Even though they never saw the fire, they got paid.

1961. POEM BY ROGER GRAY: "Trip to Vassalboro."
[trip was made July 1961. (From a copy made by Maxine Robbins; copied by Steve Robbins 29 September 1991).]
Roger Gray and Minerva Sharman For once agreed in life She to take him for her husband He to take her for his wife In many scenes and many costumes They acted on lifes stage The stories of their life work Could fill many a blank page Five children came to bless them A lively, hungry crew Three boys to raise the housetop Of girls there were only two As they grew up and faced the world Each had a place in life One of them took a husband While two each wed a wife One of them loved to wander And to distant lands did roam The other one remaining Preferred comfort in the home. To have all this family together A reunion day was planned Food prepared and packed in baskets The July skies were scanned In hardy old New England The weather plays many a trick Upon this reunion morning The skies seemed dark and thick A doubt there came to many a mind Shall we go?, Will they be here? Or will the family not be joined Until another year? In the early morning hours Heavy rain in Vassalboro fell In Wesley at a much later time It rained as some can tell. However, operations continued And at length a start was made In Wesley the rain had subsided Although of showers we still were afraid Heavy traffic there was on the airline Strings of cars were seen going each way The road being narrow and crooked Caused fast moving cars much to sway To reach the meeting place quickly Much speed there was applied Around curves and down steep hillsides It seemed like a dangerous ride The hand of providence guided And kept car and its riders from harm As they passed from forest to city Down the river and out through the farms Where the herds of cows stood in the pastures With the cornfields so pretty and green Potato fields white with their blossoms Beside them were long rows of beans At crossroads some arguments started Those guideboards were eagerly scanned Some roads by the driver accepted While others were sturdily banned At length the last curve had been rounded The lunch table came into view The cloth fairly covered with goodies Appeasing a wild hungry crew At sight of us food was abandoned A kind hearty welcome we met Those kisses and hugs and strong handshakes We will not for a long time forget With greetings and handshaking over Heavy raindrops beginning to fall Announced the approach of a shower Causing concern and worry for all From table to house food was hustled Yet raindrops were falling faster than feet Box and basket from auto was trundled By folks getting there late to eat Chicken, Hamburg and ham were paraded With salads of many a kind Frosted cake, buns and assortment of cookies Also raspberry pie we did find Kool aid, lemonade and first aid Each awaiting it's place mid the fun With sugar and chocolate candies To top off the meal, ere twas done The torrents of rain that were falling Whilst this mountain of food was consumed Fell outside on the lawn and the driveway Tho not in the big dining room. The children whom folk had fed early With so'westers and oilskins went out Having barrels of fun midst the showers Just listen to laughter and shout Amongst them were some without oilskins No so'wester there was on their head They were slow to come in when Dad called them These stayed and got soaking instead So just to make children obedient The yardstick was found and advanced Sounds like a July 4th celebration Came forth as it struck leather pants Later on as they marched round the household Quickly changed to a race past the stairs Now just to maintain peace & quiet Allen has them all sitting in chairs Right now we will speak of the absent Of Gerald who on business had flown Also Janet, whose stay must be shortened By her duties in some nursing home Tho much talk we had at this gathering And all had aplenty to eat Yet somehow with two of us absent This family did not seem complete When the rain had subsided, we ventured To take a ride up to the beans Where field of much acreage was growing The stalks standing sturdy and green On our return after calling at Jimmie's A surprise was awaiting us there Mr and Mrs. Robbins had come over They were sitting outside in big chairs [poem ends here]

"Sunday, December 27, 1964. Daddy went to Waterville this morning and got a rental trailer. We put Grampa Gray’s Christmas chair in it and left for Gram[m]ie Gray’s [in Wesley, Maine]. We got home at 9:30 p.m."
[Stephen Robbins' note: Often while we visited in Wesley, Roger Gray would doze off in the midst of the family’s ongoing conversation, while sitting in his wooden chair at the kitchen table. Also, letters which he wrote sometimes showed evidence of his dozing at the table, by the pen marks streaking down the sheets. Roger, Minerva and Austin took turns sitting and dozing in the kitchen at night, in order to keep the fire going in their one wood-burning stove, which they used for both heating and cooking (as they had no electricity). They probably dozed (at night ) in a padded rocker. At this time, Grampa Gray was most comfortable sleeping at night in a sitting position in the kitchen. The family gave Roger a reclining chair (which we called an "easy chair") as a Christmas present. It was padded, of course, and covered with dark brown vinyl. This new "easy chair" was also placed in the kitchen.]

circa 1967 to 1972. [Stephen Robbins' note: Roger Gray apparently had diabetes, which his grandfather James Gray, Junior and Uncle James "Watson" Gray may also have had. Shirley (Robbins) LeVasseur makes further comment below.] [Source: E-mail message from Shirley (Robbins) (Richards) LeVasseur to Steve Robbins, dated 21 February 2004.]
"In reading your page on 'James GRAY, Junior & Ann Eliza POLLARD '
(&lthttp://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/r/o/b/Stephen-L-Robbins/FILE/0020page.html&gt), this part reminded me of something: 'James Gray, Junior and his son, “Watson”, both had nephritis, a form of Bright’s Disease which was an inflamation of the kidneys. [Note: Bright's Disease is a common name for several types of kidney diseases in which the urine contains albumin.]' "
"First I thought of Rich's [i.e., Rich LeVasseur's] kidney disease which is a result of his diabetes, which made me think of the rest. Now, I don't know if you know this or not, but when Uncle Austin [i.e., L . Austin Gray, Junior] got diabetes, Aunt Aggie [i.e., Agnes (Diffin) Gray] remembered something from long ago. She said that when Grampa [Roger] Gray had come to stay with her [at Robbinston, Maine] for a few days [circa 1967-1972], his doctor had called her and said not to give him too many sugary sweets 'because your father has diabetes.' Well, she just thought the doctor had him confused with some other patient, he wasn't diabetic! And so she forgot about it. But then when Austin was diagnosed with diabetes recently [about 2001?], she remembered it again and thought maybe that doctor hadn't been confused after all."
"So when I read about the Bright’s Disease in the Gray family, I wondered if it might be one of the symptoms of Type II diabetes. 'Bright 's disease…a broad descriptive term once used for kidney disease with proteinuria, usually glomerulonephritis. ... Kidney disease of diabetes, IgA nephropathy, and lupus nephritis are some types of glomerulonephriti s.' i.e. Diabetic kidney disease is one type of Bright’s Disease."

04 March 1972. Roger Gray died at Down East Community Hospital in Machias, Maine. About five years later, Minerva wrote a short account of Roger's last illness, on a "Memoranda" page at the back of her 1977 diary :
"Roger went to the Machias D E C [i.e., Down East Community] Hospital 1972. He went down in Virgil Gardner's Ambulance. Didn't get to the Hospital until night as the ambulance was busy and couldn't come for him. I rode in the ambulanc[e] with Roger. Austin drove down later and got me. The next day there was a bad storm and none of us got down to see him. The next day Austin and I went down to see him and Agnes & Darrell came too. The next day, Sat. Every one of the family except Austin (he had hurt his leg with a stick while splitting wood that day) were there to see Roger. He never spoke a word to us. About an hour after leaving him he died (evening)."
