 Good evening
Birtwistle and Fielding Ltd modernised the spinning mill in 1928. A steam turbine was installed by Hick Hargreaves Ltd of Bolton. The tubine rotated at somewhere in the 5600 RPM region. It was then geared down to the main rope pulley to around 1000 RPM. The shaft diameter on the secondary gear (1000 RPM) was 8 inches in diameter. When the system was installed some pennies and half pennies were stood on end on the top of the bearing housing. When I left school and started work on 2/8/54 those coins were still standing. The mill was further modernised around 1960. All machines were driven by electrics. The weaving shed was modernised in 1948. British Northrop installed 248 LF60 automatic looms . I am not clued up on the weaving side, but more on the maintenance. Raymond Marsden might contribute if anyone wants further information. Later on in the late fifties 30 DROP BOX looms arrived on the scene(2 Shuttles). B&F closed in Mid 1968. I carried on working there until Jan 1969. Me,Ken Harrison, Stan Sutton, Roy Jones, Gordon Wilkinson and Benny Ireland scrapped lots of machines. We also dismantled a lot and sent to other factories.I had many happy hours up BUTTS. (B&F/Birtwistle and Fielding is the same as the Butts Mill, Delph Road, Great Harwood)

His daugher Angela kindly pointed out
"we lived in HOGHTON, not HOUGHTON. A very important difference. Our house, Hoghton House had originally been the Dower House for Hoghton Tower, ancient castle, home of the de Hoghton family. Sir Cuthbert made the speech at my wedding, his youngest son, Bernard (now the current baronet), was my page. "
