Note: Fought in the Philippine insurrection in the early 1900s. Earned a sharp shooter decoration. Joined his parents in Arkansas after his military service. He made a living working at the Dierks Lumber mill and working his 9 acres . I used to watch him plow that land while walking behind an old mule pulling a one row plow. A big garden was a necessity,. not a hobby. Because all their heating and cooking was from firewood, it took a lot of cutting and spiting wood with a hand ax. Granddad never owned a car, he always had a wagon pulled by mules. One of the few memories I have with him is riding to the river with some barrels in the back of his wagon. He drove the wagon into the river until the water was nearly as high as us. Then he filled the barrels with water. Riding into that river was fun for a little boy. He wasn't a drinker, but I heard he could be mean. I wonder if he ever had time or money for any fun.
