In the 1930 Census, she was 6, living with her parents and siblings in Township 3, Kern Co., California, USA. In 1940, she was living in the Wells family home in Bakersfield, Kern Co., California, USA. Her parents lived in the Robinson Street home until their deaths. Wilma Wells worked in the office of the Bakersfield store of the J. C. Penney Co., where she met her future husband, Howard Detling. The couple married in May 1962. After Howard was called to active service in the Army, they moved to Brownsville, Cameron Co., Texas. When Howard was sent overseas, Wilma returned to Bakersfield, California, and later lived with Howard's parents in Gridley, Butte Co., California. After Howard's discharge, the couple returned to Bakersfield briefly, then moved to Redding in about August 1948. In 1953, the family moved to Orland, Glenn Co., California, but returned to Redding in the summer of 1959. Howard and Wilma's five children graduated from Enterprise High School in Redding. Following Howard's retirement in 1979, the couple moved to a smaller home in northwestern Redding. Wilma spent much of her time in crafts, and visiting with her children and grandchildren. In the summer of 2001, she moved to live with daughter Adrienne Detling Riley in Pleasanton, Alameda Co., California. She died at home January 16, 2010. The following was published in the Bunker Banner, February 2010, p. 1778: Wilma Jeanne (Wells) Detling, 85, died January 16, 2010 at the Pleasanton, California home of daughter Adrienne Riley, two days short of her 86th birthday. Mrs. Detling, was born in Visalia, Tulare Co., California on January 18, 1924, oldest of four children of Frank and Verna Wells. She spent most of her childhood in Bakersfield, Kern Co., California. She worked in the office of the J.C. Penney Co. in Bakersfield, where she met her future husband, Howard Norman Detling. The couple married on May 16, 1942, in Bakersfield. After Howard was discharged from the U.S. Army following service in World War II, the couple relocated to Northern California. Howard and Wilma had three sons and two daughters, the two eldest born in Redding, California, and the three youngest born in Willows, California. She was quite proud that all her kids are all family-oriented and she delighted in the regular visits from her children, grandchilden and great-grandchildren right up until shortly before her death. Wilma Detling was a descendent of Samuel Williams, a Revolutionary War patriot, who married Sobriety Bunker, great-great granddaughter of James Bunker (D-1). Mrs. Detling was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Verna Winslow Wells; her husand, Howard Detling; brother, Glenn Edward Wells; and sister Evelyn Wells Weaver. Survivors include a sister, Edna Wells Valdez of Bakersfield; three sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas (Manuela) Detling of Medford, Oregon, Martin (Glenda) Detling of Eureka, California, and Wade (Jerie) Detling of Deer Park, Washington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Adrienne (Michael) Riley of Pleasanton and Valerie (Brad) Liggatt of Redding, California; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
