Note: According to Supplement 1 of the Bradt Book (1993), author Cynthia Brott Biasca overlooked the will of Harmon Brott until 1992. Ms. Biasca's research indicates Isaac, Sarah, Alide Cateline (Catherine in the will) and Mariah were dead by 1861, and gives the living children of Isaac and Cateline Miller. Son Peter was said to be in the State of Michigan, particular place of residence unknown. It is possible he moved on to Wisconsin, where a Peter Bradt served in the Civil War with the Wisconsin 24th infantry, and applied for a pension in 1882. In the application, he gave his age as 62, making his birth year 1820. According to the Supplement 1, this Peter is in the 1880 Soundex index of Wisconsin with a wife Emma, also born in New York, and children Eugene, Harry and Addie. However, the actual census record is from Minnesota, and records Peter A. Bradt giving his age as 39, making his birth year as about 1841. Here is the Census record: Name: Peter A. Bradt Home in 1880: Fremont, Winona, Minnesota Age: 39 Estimated birth year:abt 1841 Birthplace: New York Relation to head-of-household: Self (Head) Spouse's name: Emma L. Father's birthplace: New York Mother's birthplace: New York Neighbors: Occupation: Farmer Marital Status: Married Race: White Gender: Male Household Members: Name Age Peter A. Bradt 39 Emma L. Bradt 28 Eugene Bradt 9 Harry Bradt 7 Addie Bradt 5 Source Citation: Year: 1880; Census Place: Fremont, Winona, Minnesota; Roll: T9_637; Family History Film: 1254637; Page: 161.4000; Enumeration District: 283; Image: 0850. Therefore, based on age, Douglas Detling rules out this Peter Bradt as the son of Harmon Bradt and Hendrikje Van Antwerp. In the pension papers Peter's name was sometimes spelled Brad but his own signature was Bradt. No Peter of the right age appears on a Michigan census, according to Ms. Biasca, which is why the Wisconsin Peter seems a possible as the ninth child of Harmon and Hendrikje Bradt. However, the actual pension application should be reviewed. WI Pension application of Peter Bradt, case 467.351; DAR lineage, Surrogate Record of Harmon Bratt, Renssalaer Co., New York. See Bradt Book Supplement 1, pp. 38-39. By 2002, Laurene Grimes, who took over tracing the Bradt genealogies from Cyntha Brott Biasca, speculates that this Peter Bradt possibly married Belinda [Doug's note: A review of the Census image suggests her name was Melinda; see below] Sweet, and the couple had three children: Charles Sanford Bradt, b. about 1844, m. Jennie Dunham 1866 ** See below. Cornelia Bradt, b. about 1846 Emma E. Bradt, b. about 1848. Peter lists his occupation as shoemaker See Bradt Book Supplement 2 (2002), p. 45, and Laurie's note below. We are still speculating that Peter Bradt in Wisconsin who in 1861 married to Rose Winegar is the same as the Peter Bratt who married Belinda/Melinda Sweet in New York before 1850. However, we believe the correct Peter, son of Harmon Bradt to have been identified, as follows: 1870 Census: Name:Peter Bradt Estimated birth year: abt 1820 Age in 1870: 50 Birthplace: New York Home in 1870: Columbus, Columbia, Wisconsin Family and neighbors: Race: White Gender: Male Value of real estate: Post Office: Columbus Household: Bradt, Peter, 50, b. See also census data for Rosa Winegar Bradt. Laurie Grimes sent the following update on the family (e-mail to Douglas Detling June 2007): Peter's great-grandson Danny Wamser sent me a lot of new information on Peter. Peter and Rosa actually had 14 children, but several died young. The 3rd supplement of the Bradt book extends the lines of all the children who had issue, as much as Danny had gathered. Danny tells me that it's family tradition that Peter was married three times. He didn't know the names of the first two wives, but I'm still thinking that Belinda/Melinda (Melinda makes more sense, in terms of names in fashion at the time, but Belinda was the name given on a DAR application) was probably the second wife, and the first one was most likely before that, perhaps with no issue. Peter was a shoemaker by trade, owning shops in Fall River and Danville, WI. He enlisted in the Army on August 15, 1862, and was assigned to Co. I of the 24th Wisconsin, as a fifer. His great grandson, Michael R. Wamser (Danny`s brother) still has his fife. Peter was taken prisoner at Murfreesboro, TN and held there for four months. In early 1864, Peter went home to be with Rosa during the birth of their child. He was declared a deserter on March 11, 1864, which later made him ineligible for a pension. Peter and his family moved to Ontario, Canada, where the baby was born, staying there for two years, until they moved back to Milwaukee in 1866. From there the family moved to Fall River in 1872, then on to Danville in 1877. The Peter you found in 1870 in Columbus, WI and then in 1880 in Danville is the correct one. Where was he in 1860? Perhaps overlooked by Cynthia [Brott Biasca] in MI? I tend to think the 1850 Peter in Otisco is the right one; however, it`s still a guess. The fact that Sanford was a shoemaker, like Peter, makes the case stronger, I think, as does the fact that Sanford lived in Michigan, which matches the probate information. But maybe more searching in the 1860 MI census would be in order. [Doug's note: A June 10, 2007 complete search of the 1850 indices at Ancestry.com for Peter Bradt, Peter Bratt, and Peter Brott reveal no matching person in any state, possibling indicating that he was moving at the time of the Census, perhaps to Michigan from elsewhere.]
