Notes
a. Note:   Source for death information is German Catholic church records obtained by Margaret Buller of Madison, Wisconsin (copies in possession of Douglas G. Detling). These records (LDS film #090957 Katholische Kirche Dettensee) indicate he was 58 at death, making his birth year 1759. He was probably born in Dettingen, Germany, the home town listed for his parents Martin Dettling and Catherina Kuon.
Church records also indicate Joseph's children and their birthdates. On the death date, there appears to be some confusion. Church records appear to indicate his death occurred on December 22, 1817 with the appearance of the cross symbol on that date. However, on the burial record obtained by Margaret Buller, its says "1817 den 22 10ber begraben." According to John Von Haden (e-mail to Douglas Detling May 5, 1997), this appears to mean 'decim' + ber =December + buried or funeral, or buried on December 22 and died two or three days prior to that.
Although the first three children of Joseph and Theresia were born in Emfingem, and the last in Dettensee, the birth locations of the other children are not known.
