California Death Index record #16555: Elizabeth Miller, died Fresno Co., 4-9-25. Obituary published in Fresno Bee, April 10, 1925, states she was a native of Maine, and had lived in Kingsburg, California for 40 years. "She was well known as one of the pioneers of the community." She also smoked a pipe, which is verified in family photographs in possession of Sherianne Valdez Killion and Douglas Detling.
According to undocumented family history, some of the Winslows moved west from Nebraska, traveling by railroad to California. Among them were Betsy and her two illegitmate sons (Ernest and Stephen). If the newspaper obituary cited above is correct, their arrival in the southern San Joaquin Valley would have occurred in 1885, though this is likely to be a year off since Elizabeth married Abraham Miller in March 1886 In Nebraska. It is not known which railroad route to California was used by the family: the Southern Pacific's New Orleans-San Francisco Route (completed in January 1883) or the Atchison, Topeka and Sante Fe (which reached Los Angeles in August 1883). Since the family lived in Friend, Nebraska, it is likely that the Southern Pacific Route would have been chosen; traveling on this route would have required a southeastern trip along the Missouri River to Atchison, Kansas. On the other hand, if the trip was made in the early spring, a far more southern route might have been used. Travel to the San Joaquin Valley of California along either route was possible, because, by 1885 Kingsburg was reachable via the Southern Pacific's branch traveling south from Sacramento, or from Los Angeles north on the same route. See James E. Vance, Jr., The North American Railroad (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1995) , pp. 201-217.
