Note: John Detling's family structure described in e-mail from John Von Haden to Douglas G. Detling, November 1996. Credit for research on the Detling lineage also belongs to Margaret Buller of Madison, Wisconsin. Both John and Margaret have shared much information with descendant Douglas G. Detling. Among the early settlers of the Town of Polk, Wisconsin, According to Margaret Buller of Madison, Wisconsin, this John Detling was known as "Johannes Baptist" as shown in Catholic Church records for family of Joseph Dettling (copies in possession of Margaret Buller and Douglas Detling). John Von Haden translates these records to mean Johannes Dettling was born September 7, 1805 (LDS film #090957 Katholische Kirche Dettensee). The spelling of the name with two Ts is common in Catholic baptismal records for various locations, as recorded in the LDS Ancestral Files and in the International Genealogical Index. John Dettling married Johanna Klingler of Dettensee, Germany in 1833, and the couple immigrated to the United States, landing in Philadelphia in 1834. The family lived in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and New York until June 3, 1844, when they settled on two tracts of land totaling 240 acres (160 acres on June 3, 1844 in Section 25, and 80 acres ib July 11, 1844 in Section 26) in Polk, Washington Co., Wisconsin. He changed the spelling of his last name in the U.S., but it is not certain when, since some records in Wisconsin spell the name with two Ts. During the 28 years of his residence in Polk, he transformed 160 acres of forest wilderness into a productive farm, where he lived until 1868. The first town meeting of Polk, Wisconsin was held on Apri l7, 1846. No record of that meeting was preserved. The first meeting of the Board of Supervisors occurred on May 5, 1846, and from the minutes of that meeting, it appears that John Detling was among the first Supervisors of the Town, according to the History of Washington and Ozaukee Counties, 1881, p. 424. He was also listed as one of the 21 individuals who voted in the November 1846 election (p. 425). John Detling received two grants of acreage in Washington Co., Wisconsin on July 1, 1846 totaling 240 acres; this probably the 1844 land, but may have been exchanged.. He also received another 160 acres on March 1, 1848 in two separate transactions. All four transactions were in Township 10N, Range 19E. John Detling served as Register of Deeds in Washington Co., Wisconsin from 1864-1866. His son Valentine held that post from 1866-1870, according to the History of Washington and Ozaukee Counties, 1881, p. 381. John's wife Johanna died in 1853, and he moved to the village of West Bend in 1868, marrying Theresa Wickgruber the following year, according to his obituary published June 13, 1883 in the West Bend, Wisconsin Democrat. This is an error, since John Detling's marriage to Theresa occurred February 15, 1859, as verified in St. Lawrence Catholic Church Records, according to John Von Haden (e-mail to Douglas Detling, December 6, 1997). The couple was married earlier by a Polk Town Clerk, February 3, 1859, ( m. record #563). John Detling, age 55, appears in the 1860 Census with wife Theresia, age 41, born in Osteria (e-mail from Margaret Buller to Douglas Detling, May 13, 1997). He is shown as Johan Detling,75, born in Prussia, with wife Thereasa, 76, born in Astria. Occupation listed as retired farmer. Source Citation: Year: 1880; Census Place: West Bend, Washington, Wisconsin; Roll: T9_1450; Family History Film: 1255450; Page: 538.1000. Holy Angels Catholic Church records reviewed by John Von Haden record his death date as June 9, 1883, and his burial on June 11, 1883 (e-mail to Douglas Detling and Margaret Buller, January 15, 1998). Courthouse records reviewed by Margaret Buller and a newspaper account states he died Sunday morning, June 10 (e-mail from Douglas Detling to John Von Haden, January 20, 1998).
