Note: Birth and marriage certificates in possession of Douglas G. Detling. Ancestry.com online Social Security Death Index and various CDs incorrectly listed his birthdate as October 17, 1915. As of 2016, the error has been corrected by the Social Security Administration.
Howard's birthdate is recorded as October 7, 1915 on his baptismal record, military service records and Shasta Co., California death certificate 39345-001130. Howard was baptized April 23, 1916, in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Winona, Whitman Co., Washington. After his parents relocated to California , he became a full member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gridley, California on January 15, 1928. A year later, on June 7, 1929, Howard graduated from Gridley Elementary School. He was one of 53 graduates of Gridley Union High School on June 6, 1933.
Howard attended Chico State College, Chico, Butte Co., California, for a year during the depression, but dropped out to work. He was working at the J.C. Penney Co. in Gridley in 1936, the same year he served as treasurer of the Gridley Presbyterian Church. Howard moved to Bakersfield, Kern Co., California, where he met his future spouse at the J.C. Penney Co. store. Wilma Wells worked in the office. The couple married in May 1942.
Howard enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 8, 1942 in Los Angeles, California. He underwent basic training at Camp Roberts, California, and was made a corporal on November 28, 1942. He graduated from Field Artillery School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma on March 4, 1943, and became a second lieutenant. He was named Battalion Assistant S-2 on February 28, 1944, and on May 16, 1944 was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. He was awarded the Bronze Star on September 16, 1945, promoted to Captain of the 751st Field Artillery Battalion on December 26, 1945, and separated from active duty on February 28, 1946. He was discharged from the Army Reserves on April 1, 1953 (Military records are in the possession of Douglas G. Detling).
After active duty in the military, Howard returned to retailing, working for the J. C. Penney Co. most of his adult life. He also owned variety stores in Corning, Tehama Co., and Redding, Shasta Co., California. Howard retired from the Penney Co. after a stroke at age 64, but continued to be active after his retirement, although the stroke weakened his use of his left arm and leg. He died at age 77 in Redding Medical Center of a cerebral hemorrhage.
