Burial will be in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. He was formerly in business here for 20 years with John W. MURPHY, under the name of Avery and Murphy, Inc. Born in Cambridge, he had lived in Concord for 25 years. He was a past exalted ruler of Concord Lodge of Elks, a member of James J. Mansfield Post, No. 158, American Legion, and formerly was a member of the Concord Rotary Club and Concord Grange. He served as chairman of the Concord citizens' committee that sponsored the annual Concord High football banquets. Mr. AVERY leaves his wife, Mrs. Maude (MOULTON) AVERY; two brothers, Joseph J. AVERY in Connecticut and Thomas J. [sic for W.] AVERY in Maine, and two sisters, Mrs. Hattie T. SMITH of Belmont and Mrs. Margie SMITH of Cambridge. A son, Richard G. Walter John AVERY, 55, of Thoreau street [sic], died in his sleep in the early morning of January 15. He had attended a hockey game the night before and his death was extremely sudden and unexpected. Mr. AVERY was very popular about town for his interest in civic affairs and his untiring devotion to projects which interested him as deserving and worthwhile. He was a past Exalted Ruler of [illegible] and a member of the American Legion. More recently he served as Chairman of the Concord Citizens Committee and was the moving spirit in making the trip to Winston-Salem and the football banquet possible. He lost his only son, Richard, in World War II. His interest in Concord youth went far beyond anyone save the staff of Concord's school. He served as head linesman at all football games and was easily identified by his red hat which he wore at every contest. Mr. Avery is survived by his wife, Maude (MOULTON) AVERY, two sisters, Hattie T. SMITH of Belmont, and Margie SMITH of Cambridge, and two brothers, Joseph J. AVERY of Stamford, Connecticut, and Thomas J. [sic for W.] AVERY of [illegible] Paris, Maine. The funeral was held at 8:30 a.m. this Thursday from the Thomas H. O'Hara Funeral Home, Cambridge, with a Requiem High Mass at St. Bernard's Church in Concord at 10 a.m. Burial was in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery beside his son, Richard [the words "beside his son, Richard" were struck out by hand]. -- Walter was a fine citizen. He retired from active business upon the dissolution of his partnership and the sale of the business of Avery and Murphy to Dalton [cut off] Robinson. Since retirement he had devoted much of his time to community projects which appealed to him. He will be remembered as one who could be depended upon to carry through on any assignment which he accepted. Walter will be missed in many ways by our community. Walter John married Maud MOULTON.
