Carter, M. D. p. 861 MARCUS L. CARTER, M. D. Combining those rare attributes which go to makeup the successful professional man, financier and politician, Marcus L.Carter, M. D., of Thompsonville, Illinois, is one of the leading men ofhis section, where he has been in continuous practice for a period ofmore than thirty years. During this time he has become widely known inhis profession, has forwarded the business and financial interests of hiscommunity by his activity in these fields, and has wielded a wideinfluence in public matters, although he has been a director rather thana mere office seeker. Dr. Carter is one of the self-made men of Franklincounty, and from a humble start has worked his way to the front ranks ofthe successful business men of this part of the state. Born near Lebanon,Wilson county, Tennessee, July 5, 1848, he is a son of Henry and Nancy(Williams) Carter. Charles Carter, the grandfather of Marcus L., was a native of England,who came to this country during Colonial days, entered Washington's armyin the struggle for American independence, and served through theRevolutionary war. At the close of that conflict he removed to Virginia,where he took up land and became a slaveholder, but eventually turnedAbolitionist and set his slaves free. His son, Henry Carter, was born inVirginia, March 12, 1812, and in young manhood moved to Tennessee. Therehe resided until forced to take his family from that state, in 1857, onaccount of his views as to the Civil war, when he settled in Kentucky,where he resided until 1864. He had served in the Union army for twoyears, until wounded at Paducah, when he received his honorabledischarge. In 1869 Mr. Carter moved to Williamson county and engaged infarming until his removal to Franklin county some time prior to hisdeath, which occurred in 1890. He became a well-to-do and influentialcitizen, and was the owner of three hundred acres of fine land. HenryCarter married Nancy Williams, who was born in eastern Tennessee, in1819, and whose father, a soldier under Jackson during the war of 1812,and later a farmer, moved to Wilson county and there died. Marcus L. Carter received his early education in Kentucky and Illinois, p. 862 and after leaving the common schools began the study of medicine. He tookhis first term in the University of Louisville, Kentucky, and finallygraduated at Evansville, Indiana, in 1878, although at that time he hadbeen engaged in practice in Williamson county for seven years. Dr. Cartercame to Thompsonville in 1880, and here he has continued to serve as analleviator of the ills of mankind ever since. His practice now covers apart of four counties, but he has found time to interest himself in othermatters, being the owner of an excellent farm of three hundred acres anda director and stockholder in the Thompsonville State Bank. His work as aphysician has been characterized by faithful study, and he holdsmembership in the Franklin County Medical Society. A prominent Mason, Dr.Carter has been treasurer of his lodge for many years, and he also hasconnected himself with the Modern Woodmen of America. In politicalmatters he is a Republican and a hard and active worker in the ranks,attending various conventions and doing everything in his power toadvance the interests of his party. Starting in life a poor boy, withoutadvantages either of a financial or educational nature, Dr. Cartereducated himself, worked hard and has eventually won success. The esteemand respect in which he is held is well merited, and is due him not onlyas a successful professional man, a business man of more than ordinaryability and a citizen who has been the architect of his own fortunes, butas a friend and advisor and one who is ever ready to assist those whohave been less fortunate than he. On June 29, 1879, Dr. Carter was married to Miss Henrietta Lynch,daughter of William H. Lynch, who was born in Virginia and came later toIllinois, where his death occurred. Two children have been born to Dr.and Mrs. Carter: Dexter, who is engaged in managing his father's farm;and Dollie, who married Douglas Plasters, a merchant of Thompsonville.The family is connected with the Methodist Episcopal church, and theDoctor and his wife are well known in church and charitable work. D. Lafayette CARTER Dr. D. Lafayette CARTER, physician and surgeon, was born in WilsonCounty, Tennessee, in 1848, the son of Henry D. and Nancy (WILLIAMS)CARTER. The father, born in 1812 in Virginia, of English origin, went toWilson County, Tennessee, with his parents, when twelve years old. Hewas married there, and in 1851 moved to Henry County, Tennessee. In 1858he went to Missouri, and in a short time to western Kentucky, and thereremained, excepting two years in Illinois, until 1869, when he bought 200acres of land in Williamson County. In 1885 he settled on his presentfarm of 120 acres, near Thompsonville, still retaining thebefore-mentioned 200 acres. His wife, Nancy, was born in Tennessee in1819, and died in 1870. Ten of their fourteen children are living:Thomas; William; Mary, wife of H. TURNER; Stith; Elizabeth, wife ofJohn JORDAN; our subject; George; Henry C.; James and Elmas.Educated in the common schools of Kentucky, our subject, when twentyyears old, began medical study under Dr. R. POINDEXTER, and a year laterattended the medical lectures of the University of Louisville. In 1871he located near Corinth, Illinois, and in 1875 at Fitt's Hill, FranklinCounty. Since 1880 he has been in Thompsonville. In 1878 he graduatedfrom the Evansville Medical College. He is the oldest practicingPhysician actively engaged in Thompsonville, and by his ability andcourteous qualities has gained a very extensive practice. Politically heis a Republican, and first voted for Grant, in 1872. In 1872 he marriedHenrietta, daughter of William LYNCH, born in Jefferson County, Illinois.She is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. They have one childliving, Dexter L.
