Baptized, 8 Aug., First Reformed Church of Easton, Pennsylvania. Moved to Reading, Pennsylvania. Learned iron smelting. Worked forAlbright and Sheraton/Sherrod. Was sent to Buchanan in 1848 where heworked on construction and operation of an iron smelter, Aetna Furnace. First property -- 53 1/2 acres on McFalls' branch, a tributary ofJennings Creek, adjoining W.A. Burnet, school lot #17, Arcadia FurnaceProperty, and the road leading up McFall's Branch. Located near the topof the mountain above Arcardia and levels out to beautiful farm land.(before bridges were built, had to ford McFalls' and Jenning's 38 timesbefore bottom (now I-81). Second farm -- two miles from Buchanan on old Rt. 11 (the Pattonsburg andRockbridge Turnpike), both sides of the road. 144 1/2 acres almost to thetop of Purgatory Mountain, joining the L.A. Harlow Farm towards the top.Home place was built along Purgatory Creek (a stone's throw from I-81) Built about 1851 Declared with Virginia in the the Civil War and directed rationing offood and scare commodities in the Buchanan area. 1862 -- Supervised the building and operation of an iron furnace nearpresent Arcadia, on right bank of Jennings Creek, a tributary of theJames.
