Note: 1. Who was Thomas Shackelford's father? In notes from his grandson, Roland Shackelford (1912-1999), Thomas Shackelford's father is listed as James Shackelford. However, thiis must have been based on deductions and not from personal knowledge. A recent discovery of the obituary of James Madison Shackelford states that he had no children. Roland Shackelford probably concluded (incorrectly) that his grandfather was James Madison Shackelford based on the age of his father, Thomas H. Shackelford, and that fact that he was born only a few years after James Madison Shackelford marryied. James married Elizabeth Broom in 1830 and Thomas Shackelford was born in 1833. However, neither James Madison Shackelford nor his wife are listed anywhere in the 1840 Census. There was a child of the right age to be Thomas living with Lewis Shackelford in 1840 and Thomas was living with Lewis Shackelford in 1850. James Madison Shackelford is listed as living in Florida in 1845 and is listed in Florida in the 1860 Census working as a "branch pilot". However, James Madison Shackelford does not mention a son or any children in his very brief will in which he left everything to his third wifen nor are any children mentioned in an article in The Baltimore Sun about the funeral of James Madison Shackelford. And, now, the obituary of James Madison Shackelford has been discovered which clearly states that James Madison Shackelford had no children. This leads to the only possible conclusion given the facts which he have. Thomas must have been the son of Lewis Shackelford Mary Curtain and the younger brother of James Madison Shackelford. If this was the case, then Thomas was born when his mother was 45 and 10 years after the apparent last child of Lewis and Mary Shackelford. The only other possibility is that Mary (Curtain) Shackelford died and Lewis married a second time and his second wife, also names Mary, was the mother of Thomas. However, information from John Kennedy indicates that the Mary Shackelford, widow of Lewis Shackelford, who died in 1870 was Mary Curtain. 2. 1860 Maryland Census There are two entries in the 1860 Baltimore Census for Thomas Shackelford. One entry has Thomas, age 26, ship joiner, living with his grandmother, Mary, in Baltimore. No family is listed for Thomas. However, there is an entry for the value of his personal property of $1,000. Also, there is another entry in the 1860 Baltimore Census for a Thomas "Shackle", age 28, also listed as a "ship joiner". The entry for Thomas "Shackle" includes his wife, Louisa, age 25, and children Mary C., Ida, Ella, Annie, and Eugene (Eugenia) which clearly, based on the names and ages of the wife and children is the family of Thomas H. Shackelford. What is the explanation for the double entry? Was Thomas just visiting his grandmother when the census taker came around? Possible, but, in that case, it is not likely he would have been included as a member of the household. Were there two Thomas Shackelfords? Only one Thomas Shackelford is listed in the 1870 Census 1860 Census Thomsa Shackle 28 ship joiner b. MD Louisa " 25 seamstress Mary C. " 9 Ida " 5 Ella " 4 Annie " 2 Eugene " 10/12 3. In both the 1864 and 1871 Baltimore City Directories, there are two litstings for Thomas Shackelford. Both are ship joiners but listed at different addresses. In the 1860 Baltimore Directory, there was only one listing for a Thomas Shackelford, a carpenter at 136 Gough. 1864 Baltimore Directory Shackelford Thomas ship joiner 8 L. Broadway Shackleford Thomas ship joiner 136 Gough Were these two different Thomas Shackelfords? Or, was one address a home and the other address for his work? Only one Thomas Shackelford is listed in the 1870 Census even though there are two Thomas Shackelfords at two different addresses listed in the 1871 Baltimore Directory (see below). Thomas' mother, Mary Shackelford (widow), is also listed at 136 Gough St. and we know that this was the home address of his parents in 1860. Were there two Thomas Shackelfords, both ship joiners?
