Note: 1. Trinity Church Parish Register (Prostestant Episcopal Church), Baltimore, Maryland James Madison, son of Lewis and Mary Ann Shekelford born 3-9-1809. Bapt. 1-22-1818 2. 1850 Maryland Census Not found. James Madison Shackelford was a ship's "captain" but of what type vessel is unknown. Pershaps, he and his wife were "at sea" during this period. Records from the Association of Maryland Pilots do not show any James Shackelford. Therefore, apparently, he was not a harbor pilot like his father. He may have been an officer or captain of a Bay vessel of some sort, or he could have been a captain of a sea-going vessel. However, see #3 below. 3. 1860 Florida Census Apalachicola, Franklin County J. M. Shackleford 31 Branch Pilot b. MD $6,000 (no wife or family listed) Waterman Cloft(?) 32 Branch Pilot $2,000 b.
