Notes
a. Note:   e 1850 Census compared to other sources. In the 1850 Census, he is listed as 60 yrs, which would put his birth about 1790. However, we know from church records that he was married in 1805. It is possible, but unlikely, that he would have married at 15. In contrast to the 1850 Census, the age of the oldest male in the household is given as 60-70 which would put his birth between 1770 and 1780. The newspaper article cited under Sources stated that he was over 73 yrs of age in 1854 which would put his birth about 1781. Finally, his obituary in 1860 stated that he was 79 at the time of his death. That also would put his birth about 1781. Clearly, the age given in the 1850 Census is incorrect. All three other sources of his age are in agreement with birth about 1780/81.

Occppation: pilot. Lewis Shackelford was a Chesapeake Bay harbor pilot.
Also living in the household were Lewis Cost, age 5, and Mary C. Cost(, age 7. Lewis Shackelford's youngest daughter, Sarah Ann, married a John Cost in 1842. Could Lewis, age 5, and Mary C., age 7, be the children of Sarah Ann and John Cost. If so, where were their parents? Lewis Shackelford's son, James Madison Shackelford and his wife also cannot be found in the 1850 and Maryland Census records of other years. James Madison Shackelford was a ship's "captain" but of what type of ship is unknown. Possibly, James Madison Shackelford and his wife were "at sea". Perhaps, John Cost also was a mariner and away at this time.

Lewis Shackelford is not listed in 1860. However, his wife, Mary, and son, Thomas, are listed. Where was Lewis? As a Cheapeake Bay harbor pilot, he may have been away. However, since a harbor pilot was not away for long periods of time, it would seem that his wife would have included him among the members of the household. Lewis' obituary in the Baltimore Sun included a note for Philadelphia papers to take note and there were several men from Philidelphia at his funeral. Perhaps, he worked for periods of time in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania census records should be checked.

  10. From Captain Brian Hope, Association of Maryland Pilots, on 10 Jul 1987
"Captain Lewis Shackelford was a member of the Association of Maryland Pilots. He was licensed long before the Association was formed but he was an active pilot in 1852 and as such was one of the founding members of the Association.
Prior to 1852 the State Pilotage Law only permitted a maximum of six pilots to band together to form a pilot 'company', so there were many independent companies in existence, each competing for business, but, by law, charging the same fee for their services. In 1852 there were 14 pilot schooners operating at the mouth of the Bay, crusing around for business. Of course, not all were on station at the same time, but there were 14 in service. When an inbound ship was sighted, a race commenced, and the first pilot boat to get alongside the ship won the right to put a pilot aboard for the trip to Balttimore.
All this was changes in 1852, when the legislature gave the pilots permission to form a single association for the whole port. It was much more efficient to operate this way. Competition was eliminated, less boats were needed and the cost of operating the pilot service was reduced. The Association of Maryland Pilots was the first port-wide association in the United States...
Some pilots were owners or part owners of many pilots boats during their careers and some never owned a boat. Capt. Shackelford appears to have been one of the latter. There is no information in my records to indicate that he ever was owner or part owner of boats and probably paid a fee to the boat owners to be placed aboard ships.,,
The Association's one surviving ledger from the time when Captain Shackelford was an active pilot dates from 1856 to 1860. It showed him making a reduced share, probably because he was too old to do a regular 'turn' at the time. He was piloting on a part time basis...
Captain Shackelford's stock was paid off on May 1, 1860."

  12. War of 1812
Apparently, Lewis Shackelford served in some capacity in the War of 1812. His widow, Mary, is among those listed in an Act of the Maryland Legislature in 1868 granting a pension of $80 per annum to "certain Soldiers and Widows of Soldiers of the War of 1812".

  14. Origin of Lewis Shackelford
The first record in Marland of any record of this Shackelford family was the church record (see below) of the marriage in 1805 of Lewis Shackelford and Mary Curtain. We know that Lewis Shackelford came to Maryland from Virginia. However, despite the large and well documented family histories of the Shackelford family in Virginia starting with Roger Shackelford, the first immigrant to America, it has not been possible to place this Lewis Shackelford. Nevertheless, there are some possible clues as to his ancestry. First is his given name of "Lewis". This would appear to be a family or surname which might suggest a marriage of his father or anohter Shackelford ancestor to a woman whose maiden name was Lewis. And, indeed, there was such a marriage in Virginia during the relevant time period.
The following information was found in "Shackelford Clan Magazine", Genealogy of Shackelfords and Shacklefords, Editor: T. K. Jones 716 Ave. A Lubbock, Texas May 1949 Vol. 5. No. 1.
  A. Will of John Shackelford who died about 1801/03 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia
In the name of God, Amen: I, John Shackelford, being of sound sence and reason but weak and afflicted in body, do make and desire this, my last Will and Testament in form following:
Item: I will unto my beloved wife -- Mary Shackelford, the land whereon I now live, with all my stock of every kind, my household and kitchen furniture, together with all my plantation tools, and utensils of every kind and all the balance of my estate, both real and personal, during her natural life in case she never marries; but if she marries I then lend her one third of my estate during her natural life.
Item: I give and bequeath to my children, after the decease or marriage of my wife, the whole of my estate, to be divided equally among them, all except my son Thomas Shackelford, who I judge, has already received his part in property that I have given him.
Lastly: I constitute and appoint Waller Lewis, whole and sole executor of this my last Will and Testament, revoking all will or wills heretofore made by me.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the seventh day of April, in the year one thousand eight hundred. (April 7, 1800).
  Signed -- John Shackelford.

John Shackelford died before 1803, for we find the following instrument: Mary A., Zachariah, James B., Richard, Nancy, Peggy, and Daniel Shackelford, signed a deed for their share of -- 3 (383) -- their father, John Shackelford's estate, to John, John Shackelford, their brother (note from the transcriber: the preceding sentence is confusing, but it is an accurate transcription of the original Shackelford Clan Magazine). Deed Book Q, page 240, dated July 13, 1803. Spottsylvania County, Va.
[Records in our possession show that this John Shackelford was twice married, his first wife being Rebecca Warren, daughter of Samuel Warren; to which union was born one son-- Thomas Shackelford, mentioned in the will of John.
His second wife was Mary Mason, daughter of John Mason and his wife -- Ann Roy.
In addition to the heirs mentioned in the will and in the sale of land by the other heirs, Mrs Jennie T. Grayson says there was also a son Lewis. But we have no documentary proof of this. And of course would be forever grateful if some one can confirm this one way or the other.]
[Note the appointment of "Waller Lewis" as executor of the will and the note about another son "Lewis" not named in the will.]
  B. Also from "Shackelford Clan Magazine"
John Shackelford, whose will appears on page two of this issue of the Magazine, was a son of James Shackelford, Jr., and his wife Elizabeth Lewis. He was born about 1745, and records in our possession show that he died Jan. 4, 1801. But this date -- 7 (387) --of death must be in error, since his estate was disposed of by his heirs in 1803. So the date of his death in all probably, was Jan. 4, 1803.
John Shackelford was twice married, his first wife being Rebecca Warren, daughter of Samuel Warren, by whom he had one son -- Thomas Shackelford.
He then married Mary Mason, daughter of John Mason and his wife -- Ann Roy, to which union were born at least eight children, and perhaps nine. The known children were as follows:
  John--------------------(married Ann Dillard ??)
 Mary A.----------------(no further record)
Zachariah---------------(married 1st Susan Gilmer, married 2nd -- Sarah Christie Cave)
 James Baylor-----------(married Mary Tiffin)
 Richard-----------------(no further record)
 Nancy------------------(no further record)
 Daniel------------------(married Patsy Carr)
Margaret (Peggy)-------(never married, died at age 90)
 Lewis ?? ---------------(married Elizabeth ??)
As stated before, it is not certain if the last named son -- Lewis, is really a son. Mrs Grayson says that he is, but offers no documentary proof.
It is known that John, Jr., Zachariah and Daniel Shackelford, sons of John Shackelford and Mary Mason, remained in Virginia. James Baylor Shackelford first went to Tennessee, and later to Fayette County, Ohio, and still later to Indiana. He married Mary Tiffin in Tennessee. Also in Fayette Co., Ohio, was one Lewis Shackelford, whose wife was Elizabeth. Was he a brother to James Baylor?- 8 (388) --
[LDS Pedigree Resource Files list a Lewis Shackelford (b. 1824) as the son of James Baylor Shackelford in Fayette Co., Ohio.
  C. From the above information, it would appear that, if this John Shackelford had a son "Lewis", Lewis went to Fayette County, Ohio as did his brother. However, it also is possible that Lewis went to Baltimore. Alternatively, our Lewis Shackelford may have been related in some other way t this family or related to another Shackelford/Lewis marriage in the same area.
Indeed, there is an undocumented LDS Pedigree Resource File submitted by Sylvia Olsen, 1919 Third St Sparks Nevada 89431, which lists a Lewis Shackelford born about 1735 in Spotsylvania, VA. His parents were James Shackelford, Jr. and Elizabeth Lewis. Could this Lewis Shackelford have been the father of our Lewis Shackelford?
A posting on Ancestry.com lists this Lewis Shackelford as being born about 1749 in St. George Parish, Spotsylvania, VA.
