Note: , as Baltimore, Maryland. However, all Census records list the birthplace of both her parents as "Germany". Since, the Census records reflect what was told to the Census taker by a member of the family at the time and the information on the death certificate was provided by her grandson, William H. Davis, Jr., it seems likely that the Census information is correct. 2. 1850 Maryland Census 1st Ward Baltimore City John Betz 43 cabinet maker b. Germany Mary 38 b. MD 3. 1870 Maryland Census (Family not found in 1860 Census) There is a John Betz, born in Germany, in Baltimore in 1870 with a daughter, Rosa, age 18. However, this is not the same John Betz and daughter Rosa since Rosa's son, William H. Davis Jr., was born in June of 1869/70 and this census was taken on July 8, 1870. And, Rosa, her husband William and son William are listed separately in the 1870 Census. Is this John Betz with a daughter Rosa related? There are three men named John Betz, born in Germany, listed in the 1850 Maryland Census as living in Baltimore. All three were born in Germany. All three had young children in 1850 and, therefore, could have been the father of Rosa, born in 1851. However, one of the three John Betz families in Baltimore in 1850 had a son William, age 3/12 in 1850. In the 1870 Census, a William Betz, listed as age 22, with his wife and young child were living in the same dwelling in Baltimore as Rosa (Betz) and her husband William Davis. It is likely that this William Betz was the brother of Rosa and they both were the children of John Betz (age 43) and his wife Mary, listed with their children in the 1850 Census. Furtermore, the family of John and Mary Betz listed in the 1850 Census had another son, Jacob, age 9 at the time. There is a Jacob Betz, age 29, listed in Baltimore in the 1870 Census. And, Jacob Betz has a daughter named "Rosa". 4.1870 Maryland Census John Betz, age 63, is listed in the 1870 Maryland Census in Baltimore with a different wife, Caroline. This is the same John Betz since his age fits with that listed in 1850 and the fact that his occupation in both the 1850 and 1970 Census records was listed as "cabinet maker". It is significant that none of his children are living with him in 1870, thereby supporting the conclusion that the William Betz living in the same dwelling as William and Rosa (Betz) Davis in 1870 was the son of this John Betz and his first wife Mary. Also, birthplace listed for John Betz in 1870 Census is Wurtemberg. Based on this Census information, the John and Mary Betz listed in Baltimore in the 1850 Census most likely were the parents of Roas Betz. 5. The birthplace of Wurtemberg, Germany for John F. Betz and his wife Mary is based on information for from his obituary in a Baltimore newspaper on 28 Oct 1873 which reads as follows: Betz on Oct. 26, John Betz aged 66 yrs., born in Wurtemberg, Germany, and residing in Baltimore for the last 38 yrs. The funeral will take place from his late residence No. 191 Register St. F.P., this (Tuesday) at ten o'clock. Information obtained from Joan Betz (JSchoBet@aol.com) 6. Ocuupation: cabinet maker in 1850 and 1870 Maryland Census John Betz is listed in the 1864 Baltimore City Directory at 191 S. Register. Occupation: "cabinet maker". Also listed at this address is a Jacob Betz. 7.. 1890 Baltimore City Directory lists a John F. Betz Address: 1012 S. Chesapeake Occupation: clerk Probably a son or grandson of John F. Betz (Sr.). 8.
