Note: Gladys Evelyn Nelson Hendricks was born to Carl W. and Johanna Nelson at Rockford, IL on December 22, 1907. She came to Perkins County with her parents, a brother, Lester, and a sister, Hazel on July 4, 1908, and grew up on the family homestead southwest of Lodgepole. She was educated in the Bealer School and later worked for O. A. Larson at the Lodgepole Store, the hotel in Lodgepole and the Halsey Ranch near Lodgepole. She was married to George Hendricks on Decenber 20, 1934. They lived on several farms before buying the Emil Odou homestead where they have lived for the past 50 years. To this union were born three sons, Eugene Lee and Lyonne David, who died in infancy and Gary, who resides on the original Nelson homestead, and two daughters, Gwen Schwartz of Fort Collins, CO and Laurel Hofeldt, of Denver, CO. She is survived by her husband, George; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Laureen; Daughters and sons-in-law, Gwen and Larry Schwartz and Laurel and Fred Hofeldt; eight grand children, two great-granddaughters, and many relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, brother and two infant sons. Always active in community affairs, Gladys worked in the Duck Creek Cuhurch and Ladies Aid, was Republican Precinct Committee Woman for many years, was active in the Jolly Jills Homemaker's Club, and was county chairman for Mental Health Assciation and a Duck Creek coeerspondent for the Adams County Record for many years. She was an outspoken advocate of the neighborhood church, the country school and the family farm and worked for political and social programs to encourage the rural way of life. She had been in failing health for the past five years and died at her home early Friday morning, September 21, 1990. Funeral Services were held September 24, at the Hettinger Lutheran Church with Rev. Oliver DeWald officiating. Casket bearers were Philip Ellingson, Roger Nash, Oscar Viken,Jr., Dennis Nash, Kevin Van Sloten and Jim Hallen. Honorary casket bearers were her "Dear Friends and Neighbors." Special Music was provided by Rodney LeFebre, organist and George Anderson, vocalist singing "One Day at A Time" and "Jesus Understands." Internment was in the Duck Creek Cemetery with Walby Funeral Chapel, Hettinger, in charge of arrangements. Adams County Record Hettinger, North Dakota September 1990
