Michael Organ was charged at the City Court yesterday with the larceny of three books from the Public Library, Melbourne. James Gearin, assistant in charge of the stock book, Public Library, said that three books, entitled "Home Life in Scotland," "From Rhodesia to Egypt," and "Travels in Sunny Lands," had been missed from the library between July 31 and August 9. Charles John Smith, manager of the secondhand book department, Cole's Book Arcade, said that he had bought the books from Organ for 2/ each on different occasions. iWtness (sic) became suspicious as to how Organ had become possessed of them, and, after his third visit to the shop, communicated with George Robertson and Co. Pty. Ltd., who told him that the books had been bought from them by the Public Library. Witness then informed the Library authorities. Mr. N. Sonenberg, who appeared for the defence, asked that Organ should be dealt with under the First Offenders Act .The lad was only 18 years of age, and out of the 22/6 a week which he earned he had been keeping himself and also assisting his mother, who was a widow and had four young children. She was in very poor circumstances, and was working on a dairy farm. Organ was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the sentence to be suspended on his entering into his own bond of £25 to be of good behaviour for twelve months." «i»«tab» «/i»
