Note: N5340 Blown up and badly injured in first tank battle of the Somme 1916. In Royal Tank Regiment.
Known as Dick?
Was he Leonard Richard or Richard Leonard?
The Battle of the Somme is famous chiefly on account of the loss of 58,000 British troops (one third of them killed) on the first day of the battle, 1 July 1916, which to this day remains a one-day record. (This would appear not to be the tank battle.)
The very first battle involving tanks took place on the Somme on 15 September 1916.
Kennington is next to, and now a suburb of, Ashford.
