Note: N711 Inveravon register FR124 (My note says “Out of context” - did I mean out of date order?) has a William Cameron christened 15 June 1750, son of William Cameron or McPhail, and Henrietta Gordon. “Cameron or McPhail” is one of the known “alias” names for Cameron, in Banff at this time. --- I did have his birth as 1748, but Nicol Camerons says this is in fact the date that he and Henrietta (re)built ___ House. --- Scotlandspeople does not give anything for Wm Cameron and spouse Gordon 1740-90. Same for Wm McPhail. --- There were two separate tribes of Camerons which settled on Speyside: The first tribe was descended, according to tradition, from twelve clansmen who were sent by Lochiel (probably Ewen Allanson) as a bodyguard for his daughter who is said to have married a Stewart of Kincardine. This was about the middle of the 16th century. .... The second tribe has a different origin in the Camerons of Glennevis. The tradition was narrated by Ewen Cameron of Glennevis in a letter to Captain Alexander Cameron of Milton of Balvenie, Banffshire [son of this William C], dated 1785. The gist of the story was that after Allan M'Ilduy of Lochiel had slain Alastair of Glennevis and many of his men as a result of their rebellion against him in 1613, one of the Glennevis clansmen, closely related to Alastair, fled with the young heir to Huntly at Gordon Castle. Huntly, who had been the instigator of the rebellion, and was feudal superior of the Glennevis lands, undertook the protection of the young chieftain. When the young man came to manhood he returned to Lochaber and took command of his tribe, but the guardian settled at Balvenie which lies on the river Fiddich, a tributary of the Spey just south of Dufftown, and from him were descended many families of Cameron in that neighbourhood. (MacKenzie's History of the Camerons, pp. 399-402.) Quoted on http://www.kiwithai.com/_Cameron/page229.html --- Speyside is home to a sizable population of Camerons, said to be descended from 12 young Camerons who escorted a lady of the House of Lochiel to marry a Stewart of Kincardine in the mid-1500's. It has been suggested that one of these men might have been Donald Taillear Dubh na Tuaighe Cameron, and the men were his followers. Similar to the history of the Camerons of Hilton and Kincardine. Another possible influx of Camerons are said to have been brought on during the early seventeenth century, descended from a cadet of the Camerons of Glenevis, who left Lochaber in charge of his infant Chief and eventually settled at Balvenie, just south of Dufftown. www.clan-cameron.org --- IGI has: William McPhaile bapt 11 APR 1744, Inveravon, Banff, Scotland, Father: PETER MC PHAILE, Mother: ISOBEL MILLAN - William McPhail bapt 28 JUL 1708 Inveravon, Banff, father John McPhail --- William’s children are given in this order on the Cameron family tree: Alex, John, Peter. But I have Peter being about 30 years older than Alexander and John - which clearly is nonsense!
