Note: N2628 The middle initial M comes from the book “King Edward, Aberdeenshire” by James Godsman, 1952. --- Inherited Beldorney Castle in liferent, on death of his brother Sir William in 1832. --- Beldorney passed to his [Sir William Grant’s?] brother, Major John M. Grant of Dawlish, who died in 1838. --- Barton House had been the home of Admiral John Schank, John Grant’s brother in law, and “During the last two years of [John’s brother, Sir William]’s life he [William] lived chiefly at Barton House, Dawlish, the residence of his sister, the widow of Admiral Schank; and at that place he died, May 25, 1832.” --- The former Barton House was for many years the most important house in the parish. (it occupied the site of the present Barton Crescent), The estate attached to the house was known simply as The Barton but parts of it were underlet to various occupiers. It [originally] included almost all of the land now included in modern Dawlish (to the South of the stream). It was owned by John Inglett Fortescue who leased the house to Admiral John Schanck. --- However Magna Britannica 1822 says” The Barton of Dawlish, belonged some time since to Richard Inglett Fortescue, Esq., ...is now the property and residence of John Schank, Esq., Vice Admiral of the Red.” --- On 12 Dec 3rd Royal Garrison Battalion was raised in Jersey in 1802 from various Corps of Invalids in the UK. 7 Sept 1804 it was named the 3rd Royal Veteran Battalion. 15 July 1814 it was disbanded at Chelsea. June 1815 it was reformed in Orkneys and Shetlands from two companies each of the 6th Royal Veteran Battn and the 9th Royal Veteran Battn. 5 Jul 1816 it was disbanded at Edinburgh. Reformed 1819-21, and 1821-26. --- His granddaughter Ella Jane, dau of his son William James Grant, was born in Jersey in 1868, apparently. --- Robert Grant of Elchies in 1801 refers to his “Nephew Capt John Grant of the 65th Regt of Foot”. --- Won’t be a death certificate as they were introduced on 1 July 1837. --- Gentleman’s Mag Feb 1837, obituaries: Dec 25: At Dawlish, aged 71, Major John Grant. --- Major John Grant dept. this life Dec. 25 1833. (Notes on the Churches of the Deanery of Kenn, Devon. Page 65.) --- Who was the “C S Grant” of Ickleton, Great Chesterford, Essex, who stayed with Colin Cameron (maj. John Grant’s g grandson) in 1931 and 1932? A relation? --- Major John Grant, Invalids, Jersey was listed as one of the Proprietors of Unclaimed Dividends on Bank Stock...at the Bank of England in .
