Note: N8913 Name given as Sara West SIMPSON on Colin Cameron’s family tree. Also on back of her portrait. --- “Epitaphs and Inscriptions of Aberdeenshire” says that her memorial says she died 27 January 1861, age 60.WRONG - the inscription says age 69 (RH). So she was 36 years younger than her (eventual) husband. --- Had a brother William West of Powderham. --- For 1851 census she was at Beldorney Castle, described as a Landed Proprietor, and gave her age as 49 (ie born 1801 or 1802), born in England. --- “At Beldorney Castle, Sarah West, relict of Major John Grant 3rd Royal Veteran Battalion, of Beldorney and Dawlish. 14th February. ...” (Aberdeen Journal. Notes and Queries. v.3 (1910) Page 207.) --- In 1837 “the whole of the next of kin [of William James Grant, John and Sarah’s son] were resident in England or otherwise abroad”. --- Worth investigating: Her name is given as “Sara West Simpson” on Colin Cameron’s family tree. Also on back of her portrait. --- Her eldest son William James gave two of his children the forename Simpson. --- Could the Simpson name be anything to do with the family Simpson of Cobairdy? It seems her son married the sister in law of a Simpson of Cobairdy. From Monumental Inscriptions book: “Mrs Grant [referring almost certainly to wife of William James G] and Mrs Simpson of Cobairdy [not sure who they are referring to] were daus of Alexander Carny...” Thanage of Fermartyn says there is “massive granite stone” in Forgue churchyard with inscription “to the memory of Margaret Carny, widow of Robert Simpson of Cobairdy, who died 3 July 1885, aged 61” Also on same stone is (presumably) Robert’s first wife Barbara Forbes, and himself, died 16 Dec 1884, aged 80. --- “The most extensive landowners [in Forgue] are Morison of Bognie, and Simpson of Cobairdy; and there are twelve others.” (No date given for this quote from some local guide - probably late 19th cent)
