 Lieutenant Colonel Robert Alexander Peter Grant took the MRCS in 1858 and entered the Army Medical Department as an assistant surgeon on 13 June 1859.
 In 1863–1866, he served in the New Zealand Wars with the 43rd Light Infantry. He was present at several engagements in the province of Taranaki and was brought to the notice of the Colonel Commanding the District “for the very zealous and efficient services rendered at an engagement on 28 July 1865 when he was exposed to a heavy fire under which he directed Captain Close who was mortally wounded to be carried under cover”. He was mentioned in dispatches (London Gazette 20 October 1865), and received the campaign medal.
