Text: Michael J Hodgson family tree. Researched by John Dryden Hodgson in 1882, and Francis Cotterell Hodgson in 1884, from Hawkshead registers, and by Henry John Hodgson from MS books of John Hodgson (1751-1837) and James Hodgson (1711-27).
Note: N7323 Marriage at St. Augustin (nr. St.Paul’s) London:
23 Jul 1713. Henry Vaughan, Chaplain at Aske's Hospital, Hoxton, and Mary Marshall of St Leonard, Shoreditch. Licence.
(Miscellanea Marescalliana, genealogical notes on the surname of Marshall. George William Marshall. 1883.)
7 Dec 1741: A Daivd Marshall of Hoxton in the parish of St. Leonard, Shoreditch, made his will. He was a Gardner and Victualler. He mentions:
Sister Elizabeth wife of John Dennum.
Proved 16 Dec 1741.
A Hannah Marshall was buried in the South Aisle of St. Augustin, where Mary was married) on 18 August 1762.
Interesting that a statute required the Chaplain of the Aske Hospital, Hoxton (the role he held from the very year Henry Vaughan got married), to be unmarried, according to John Cope, Archivist, Haberdashers Company.
Is this her memorial in Leominster church?
Here lie the bodies of
Thomas Vaughan 1725
Mary Vaughan 1740
If faith unfeigned and virtuous deeds could save
From death they had escaped the grave.
What earthly was to earth did here descend.
Their fouls were fitted for a nobler end;
Patient the fuff’rings of this life they bore,
In hopes of landing on another fhore,
Where Death has no dominion — forrows ceafe,
Where gladnefs reigns and everlafking peace.
(Surely they must have either been husband and wife, or siblings?)
