In 1863: A gardener, of Little Ellingham, in 1863 when his daughter Ellen was baptised. In 1871 census of Little Ellingham he was a Gardener* at The Green, Little Ellingham, age 43.* Would mean Market Gardener. In 1881 census he described himself as Gardener and Publican, age 54. In 1883 Nursery and seedsman, and victualler, Bear Inn (William White's History, Gazetteer, and Directory of Norfolk 1883) In 1883 William Shorten was publican of The Bear, Attleborough, and a Nurseryman (In Kelly’s Directory ) In 1891 census he described himself as Licensed Victualler and Farmer, age 65 In 1891 Kellys (?) he was listed as “publican and farmer” and in 1893 as publican & nursery & seedsman. In 1901 census he described himself as a Publican (at the Bear Inn). --- Neither he or his wife signed their daughter’s marriage certificate [Source: Jill Cameron]. --- The Bear, Queens Road, Connaught Nursery, Attleborough. [Queens Road is presumably a renaming of the end of Ellingham Road]. Plans to demolish and turn site into housing opposed throughout 1998 & 1999. Planning refused for demolition December 1999. But site won approval for housing. House closed and boarded up January 2000. The name (but not premises) was reborn when the long closed premises of the Oddfellows, in Exchange St., reopened as the Bear, April 2000. (http://www.norfolkpubs.co.uk/norfolka/attleborough/attlbe.htm) Photo of the pub on this site. --- In 3 April 1881 census he said he was 54 - if he was born 7 Apr 1828 he would in fact be 52. --- Did he marry before marrying Mary Alborough? - was he the William, son of William S, age 20 years [eg b abt 1826], who married Margaret dau of Mathew Stone age 21 years at St. Marys Sprowston, “around 1846”? --- 1841 Census of Trowse Newton (just outside Norwich) has a William Shorten age 15 living with Richard and Mary, both age 35. Richard was a ___ Carter. Also there was Harriet 8, Matilda 6, Richard, 2. All born in Norfolk. --- “Helena Hayden contacted me a while back and she has a few of our ancestors wrong !!! I can also correct for you William the Publican's pub: the correct name for the establishment in Attleborough, Norfolk, (my son lives there) was called "The Bear Hotel" which is in Queen's Road and had 12 rooms. Now a private residence. "The Bear" Pub in Exchange street was originally called "The Oddfellows". This was closed by Watney's brewery in 1977, and reopened as Dominics Restuarant, and in 2000 it was re-named "The Bear", This is where the confusion arises. I have opened my tree for you which may help although I have not got all of it on this site.” (Mike Copland. mike.copland@talktalk.net )
