Notes
a. Note:   N10230 Salhouse to Sprowston is about 5 miles.
 ---
Ray Hagan Banks (banks@burgoyne.com) has the 1841 [7 June] Census for Sprowston (part of Norwich) showing:
William Shorten age 50 [ie born 1791] ag. lab.
 Mary (nee Farrow*) age 50
Daniel age 20 [born 26 May, bapt 2 Jun 1822 at Sprowston.]
 Ann age 15
William age 14 [ie born 1827]
 Rachel age 11
[I can’t find this census entry on ancestry.com]
 * her maiden name would not be shown on Census?
 ---
William Shorten, weaver, and Mary, had a dau Mary Ann born 5 Oct, bapt 9 Oct 1825 at Sprowston.]
 --
William is given as a weaver in the Sprowston parish register for the baptisms of Daniel in 1822 and Mary Ann 9 Oct 1825, but a labourer for the bapts of Amelia 7 July 1833, James Richard 27 Dec 1835. Presumably all those younger children died young, as they were not in the 1841 census?
 ---
Richard. I need to study your tree further, but quickly...........before Sprowston.... look at Salhouse. Before that........Blofield.
There is a William born to John Shorten and Elizabeth Thacker in Salhouse.
The first William dies, then there is a second, born around 1794. Is this second son your William?
If so, I descend from his brother, Charles Thacker Shorten, who did end up in Sprowston. Members of Charles' family were employed as gardeners. It does sound like we have a connection, but further investigation is necessary.
I have the Shorten line traced back to Blofield.
I am still seeking the background of Elizabeth Thacker.
 ---
A Thacker Shorten and his wife Mar had children bapt in Sprowston in 1832 and (twins) in 1835.
 ---
Pockthorpe (where William junior was bapt in 1828) is next door to Sprowston. Sprowston is about 5 miles from Salhouse, and Blofield is 3 miles from Salhouse.
 ---
William Shorten married Mary Farrow of Sprowston Oct 10, 1811, witnesses Joseph Horace and Mary Shorten.
Shorten, William single, married Mary Farow, single, both of Sprowston, banns 22 Sept, 29 Sept, 6 Oct, 1811.
 ---
His son Daniel had a son Daniel who became licensee of the Dove, Sprowston (closed 1909), on 12 April 1879, and was convicted 9 June 1883 for being open out of hours. (Fine 20/- plus 13/- costs.)
