Note: N574 There was no James or Eliza Hunter in Morton for the 1841 census, of the right age. --- Colin Cameron’s family tree says that he lived at “Thornliebank”. Thornliebank is a town in Renfrewshire, nr Glasgow. But maybe this was a mistake for Thornhill, Dumfries, since that is where his son was said to be born. Thornliebank was apparently founded by the Crum family in 1778 to bring workers from Ireland and elsewhere to work in the cotton mill they set up there. They then had a large printing works (Crum’s Printworks) which went out of business after Alexander Crum died in 1893. -- Does the fact that he had a brother known as “Jock The Laird” suggest that James was the younger son, (so not the “laird”)? --- Hunters of Vienna, America, can be seen here: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&db=:470640&id=I1068 --- His son James’s presumed matriculation record at Glasgow makes this James a “craftsman”, which presumably covers a wide range of possibilities. --- British Vital Records has a John Wallace Hunter born 27 Jul 1812, Morton By Thornhill, Dumfries, son of Thomas Hunter and Janet Wallace. Presumably no connection?? --- James Hunter (1818-1894) was the son of James Hunter (supposedly the second son of Laird of Huntersholm in Polmuid). (Lynne Gantt)
