Note: N16107 “The mother of Theophilus Eaton is often called Elizabeth Shippard/Sheapheard. This based on a marriage record from Ludlow Shropshire which reads "by authoritie of St. Katherine's day being the ffaire day at Ludlow"; however, as noted in both Molyneux and by Helen Ullmann, "Elizabeth wife of Richard Eaton and oneley da. of Thomas Sheapheard, of Eastfields, bur. Nov. 11, 1636."
The mother of Theophilus Eaton occurs in the records of New Haven, Connecticut and died there in 1647, so clearly Elizabeth Shippard is not the mother of Theophilus Eaton. Both Molyneux and Ullmann then state that Elizabeth Shippard probably married the father of Richard Eaton, Richard Eaton Sr. Note that both father and son were vicars of Great Budworth leading to some confusion between the two men.
Richard Eaton Jr. was born c1584 (age 18 in 1592). I have seen a date for the Richard Eaton/Elizabeth Shippard marriage as January 28, 1589/90. This would make it impossible for her to be the grandmother of Theophilus Eaton and likely to be his mother.
This data is not reconcilable. So one of the following tidbits of data is wrong:
Elizabeth Shippard m. Richard Eaton January 28, 1589/90
Elizabeth Shippard Eaton died Nov 11, 1636
Mother of Theophilus Eaton died in 1647.
If the date of the marriage is correct, it is most likely that the Richard Eaton who married Elizabeth Shippard is not the same as the Richard Eaton father of Theophilus Eaton.
Can anyone verify the date of the marriage from the primary source?
