Notes
a. Note:   The following notes were written by Jean R Smith in 1996.

Charles was born 21 December 1860 at Bream Creek, Tasmania. He came to Alberton, Gippsland as a small child with his parents. He followed his father in becoming a Bootmaker. I presume his father taught all his sons because they all were Bootmakers. At some time he served in the militia. A tall, erect, very strict man. On 17 March 1886 he married Johanna Doyne at Longford, Victoria. She was a nurse who he met when in hospital. They moved around Gippsland. At one stage they lived at Walhalla. My grandmother, Trevena, could remember going to school there, and she would tell us about the houses on the sides of the steep hills. They had seven children and Johanna died on 30 June 1902. The elder children reared themselves but Mrs. Pierer reared the two younger ones.

On 14 April 1903 Charles married Gertrude Ellen Shallcross a widow who came from Ireland. She had a son and a daughter. They married at Clifton Hill in the Baptist Church. She died in1913 of T.B. They had five children, two having died, William aged 14 days and an unnamed girl stillborn on 9 July 1908.

On 19 June 1914 he married Annie Florence Tate, also a widow with one daughter. His address then was Port Melbourne. I know they lived in Northcote.

Family Story: Annie was a friend of Gertrude's and she had asked her to take care of her children.

Charles eventually went to live with his son John at Apollo Bay. He died and was buried there on 20 March 1944.
