Notes
a. Note:   The following notes were written by Jean R Smith in 1996.

Mary Ann called herself Holding. She was 2 years old when her mother died. Who looked after her? On certificates of hers she lists her mother as Mary Ann, father unknown. She was my grandmothers grandmother. She used to tell her, her mother was a convict from Roseneath Scotland. Sent her out here for stealing a handkerchief. That she had been born in the Hobart Prison. But I have proved this all wrong. Perhaps this same lady may have brought her up? Is it strange or just a coincident that she names her first daughter Caroline?

Mary Ann Holden (Holding) married on 10 May 1857 at St David's Church, Hobart to John Riley. He was a shoemaker from Bream Creek which is near Eaglehawk Neck. On his marriage certificate he could not sign his name, but she could. This is interesting as I have later found he could read and write imperfectly. They had two children born in Tasmania, then came to Alberton Gippsland. Cannot find the shipping list but their next child was born there in 1862. They had ten children and according to their births moved from Alberton abiut 1870 where one was born at Rosedale, The next three Cowarr wherew they lived until Mary Ann died 4 May 1895. She is buried at Toongabbie. She is listed as a Dressmaker as were her daughters.
