Mrs. Martha Proctor Spencer, who died in this cityJanuary 24, (1902) was born in Independence, Jackson County, MOJune 24 1834, and with her parents moved to Holt County, thatsame state, in 1842. She was married to James R. Spencer ofIndiana in 1852 and started across the plain the same year.They lived in Oregon, California and Idaho until 1866, when theysettled at old Champoeg. In 1872 the family moved to ForestGrove, and a short time afterward in Cornelius, where Mr.Spencer engaged in the (?) and tile business. In 1880 a movewas made to Portland, where Mr. Spencer engaged in the grocerybusiness. In July 1884 Mr. Spencer was taken ill withpneumonia, and died on the 20th of the month. Eight childrenwere born to this union, seven of whom are living - John A.Spencer, whereabouts unknown: Mrs. Laura Guild, Grants Pass;Mrs. Lily M. Bright, Los Angeles, Ca; Mrs. Elvira A.
