a. Note:   Lacy married his first cousin.
Following is a recollection by Mary Linda Winstead Janke:
It was summer when the call came about Lacy and Sarah Winstead. I was visiting Grandma and was the only one in the house when a neighbor called and left the message about their death with me. Grandma was furious that she left that kind of information with a child. The neighbor, Janie Dixon did not give me details, just told me to tell Grandma that they had both died. It was a shock as they had just been home from Florida for a visit and I had seen and talked to them. Looking back on it I wonder if Lacy planned the visit as a chance to say good bye, but there was no indication that there was anything wrong at the time. When the murder/suicide occurred Lacy, Sarah, and their youngest son Ramey (short for Raymond) were in the house. It was late at night. He shot her, called the police to tell them what he had done and before they got there, shot himself in the head. He was still alive when they arrived but died shortly after. Ramey who was about eight years old was asleep at the time and slept until the police woke him. The oldest son, Lacy, Jr. was away at school. The police were taking Ramey to a friend's house to be cared for until arrangements could be made for him and he asked to go back and get his little cocker spaniel. I do not believe there was neither a note nor any reason given by Lacy for his actions. Their marriage had been troubled at times prior but as far as anyone knew they had resolved their problems. Ramey eventually settled with his mother's parents over in the Olive Hill community and still lives in Person County. Lacy, Jr. also came back here to live when he finished school.
