Note: In his OBIT, his name was spelled CARL, and had been scratched out and replaced with CORL, in what looks like the handwriting of Florence Corl Washburn. The obit had a large picture (drawing). The caption beneath the picture reads: RICHARD S. CARL (CORL) of Schenectady. A HIGHLY-ESTEEMED CITIZEN WHOSE DEATH CAUSED SORROW TO MANY. The complete obit follows: RICHARD S. CARL (CORL), of Schenectady. Feb 8. - The death of Richard S. Carl, which occurred suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Hallenbeck, in Albany, last week, removed an old and well-known resident of this city. His home was at the corner of Van Vranken avenue and Nott street. He served for several terms as superintendent of streets with credit to himself and advangage to the city. Besides the daughter whom he was visiting at the time of ths death, he is survived by his wife and two sons, James, of this city, and Charles R., of Albany. The burial was in Vale Cemetery. Mr. Carl was in his 83rd year. He was a life long Democrat and a worker for the party. He was a member of the Congregational Church during the pastorate of Rev. Mr. Munsell, now of Saratoga, who officiated at the funeral. He was employed for 37 years as baggage master on the N.Y.C.R.R. on the run from Albany to Buffalo, and during all those years he never lost a day. On his Vale card, his cause of death is listed as "Grippe & Bronchitis." Richard is buried at Vale cemetery (Lot 23-A) in Schenectady. All 3 of his wives are beside him. 1850 Federal Census, New York, Schenectady, 3rd Ward Richard Corl, age 30, male, laborer, b. NY Malinda, 25, female, b. NY Robert, 5, male, b. The following is from an email sent by Jerry Bloss, remembering Vale cemetery in Schenectady: "About the graveyard. Yes, I remember the plot because we visited there many times. Then there were many times when I was by myself, I'd spend time there. The Hallenbeck/Corl grave site is in a very nice area on a hillside overlooking a lagoon. The scene is a beautiful one when you can stand by it and see that quiet body of water through large trees that I'm sure are still there. The plot is a good distance from any street. It's quiet. Peaceful. A perfect place for one to lay back on the grass and listen to hundreds of robins singing their hearts out. I used to imagine they comprised an ornithological orchestra performing just for me. That entire resting place was a well managed forest. There was hardly any place that wasn't covered with the shade of ancient deciduous and evergreen giants. Some of the grave markers were large pieces of statuary. Many of which, because of their age, were hand carved." The Corls were soldiers. Hendrick Corl came to Schenectady in 1745, where he married Maria Olin. John, his son, born April 3, 1757, married Susanna, daughter of Jan Baptist Van Vorst. He was a gallant private in Captain Clute's company in the Revolutionary War, and died April 24th, 1842, in his eighty-fifth year, leaving several children surviving. William, another son of Hendrick, born November 16th, 1760, married Maria Springer, July 8th, 1787. He was also a patriotic private in Captain Vrooman's company, in Colonel Wemple's Regiment in the Revolutionary War. He died March 19th, 1848, aged eighty-four years. His wife died May 5th, 1852, aged ninety-one years. They left several sons and daughters and many descendants surviving them. More notes on Vale Cemetery - Lot 28A: Melinda Reese- wife of Richard S.
