a. Note:   Was a POW in Civil War. In Apr, 1879 he purchased the old Van Hook house, farm, tavern, or inn for $1,800.00. It was on 231 acres, near Leasburg. He moved in with his wife and their 3 young sons. James died of pneumonia when his youngest son was only 18 months old.
  Memorial.
  To-day, a meeting of the Lea's Chapel Sunday School was held in memory of James F. Winstead, who died December 4th, 1889.
  On motion, A. J. Hester was made chairman, and feelingly stated the object of the meeting.
  Touching and feeling remarks were made in reference to the life and character of deceased by Capt. T. J. Stephens.
  On motion, the chair appointed a committee of three, viz., Capt. T J. Stephens, Geo. A. Rogers and R. N. Featherstone, to draft resolutions of respect for our deceased brother.
  The committee made the following report:
  Whereas, The Alwise God, has seen fit to remove Bro. Winstead from the cares of this life to an eternal, and we trust, blissful abode. therefore
  Resolved, That in the death of Bro. Winstead, this Sunday School has lost an earnest and faithful worker; thy church, one of its most respected and honored members; the community, an upright, honest and conservative citizen; and family, an affectionate husband, a kind and indulgent father.
  Resolved, That we tender our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family, and pray the blessings of Almighty God upon them in this their sad bereavement.
  Revolved, That a copy these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of our Sunday School, a copy be sent to the family of deceased, a copy be sent to the Person County Courier and Raleigh Christian Advocate with a request to publish.
