Sawyer, 74, died Nov. 20, 2003, at the Courtland Nursing Home, Ellsworth, five days short of her 55th wedding anniversary, as the result of aggressive Alzheimer's disease. She was born April 20, 1929, in Orland, the daughter of Crestel F. (Perkins) and Newell E. Cunningham Sr. Betty enjoyed camping, bluegrass festivals, television soap operas, Yahtzee, cribbage, rummy, crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She was especially fond of her "little sweetheart" Lucky, her Pug dog. Betty will be missed by her husband, George Sawyer of Orland; her daughter, Barbara; her granddaughter, Stacy; and her great-grandson, Justice, all of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters, Freda Hewes Smith of Orrington, and Doris Beaulieu, a resident of Penobscot Nursing Home; one brother and sister- in-law, Robert and Verna Cunningham of Ellsworth; several cousins, nephews, and nieces. She was predeceased by her brother, Newell Cunningham Jr. A graveside memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at Silver Lake Cemetery, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Donations in Betty's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101-2406.
