Notes
a. Note:   This is from England:
I have some results to report on Aaron Arrowsmith, his family and parentage,
as obtained from the 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses. These show the names of
his parents, but I have not actually found a baptism record yet, as I will
 explain.
The 1881 census details that you already had were, as you probably know, for
the household then at 79 Chapel Lane, Wigan. In the previous census, taken
in 1871, the family was in the Scholes area of the town of Wigan at an
address called 40 Hardy Butts (reference RG10/3885 folios 178v and 179), and
 consisted of:
Aaron Arrowsmith, Head, 38, Joiner & Wood turner, born at Wigan
 Elizabeth, Wife, 35, born Bolton
 Frances, Daughter, 12, born Newton-le-Willows
 William, Son, 10, born Wigan
 James, Son, 7, born Wigan
 John, Son, 5, born Wigan
 Louisa, Daughter, 3, born Wigan
 Aaron, Son, 1, born Wigan
Moses, Son, 1 month, born Wigan
I am not sure if you had the additional member of the household in 1881,
 entered as:
James Barker (Arrowsmith), adopted, 13. For your information, there is a
Barker household in 1871 not far from the above, consisting of a Mary Barker,
married, aged 42, born Wigan; James Barker her son, 2, born Pemberton; Hannah
Arrowsmith, stepdaughter, 17, born Wigan; Mary E. Arrowsmith, stepdaughter,
14, born Wigan; and Francis Arrowsmith, stepson, 7, born Wigan.
In 1851, Aaron was with his parents at Coal Yard, Wigan, located near
Warrington Lane (ref. HO107/2199 fo. 331v):
William Arrowsmith, Head, 54, Engineer, born Wigan
Frances Arrowsmith, Wife, 47, born Wigan
 Aaron Arrowsmith, Son, 17, Joiner
 Jane Arrowsmith, Daughter, 13
 John Arrowsmith, Son, 6.
I have not found Aaron in that area of Wigan in 1861, but he might have been
elsewhere including perhaps in Bolton where he may have met his wife. I have
however incidentally traced William through 1861 and 1871 as follows:
1861, Coal Yard, Wigan (ref. RG9/2773 fo. 44v)
William Harrowsmith, Head, 63, Engine Feeder [at] Cotton Mill
 Frances Harrowsmith, Wife, 60
 John Harrowsmith, Son, 17, Carter
  1871, 10 Coal Yard, Wigan (ref. RG10/3885 fo. 132)
William Arrowsmith, Head, Widower, 73, Engineer
 John Arrowsmith, Son, 27, Carter.
It is worth noticing the Harrowsmith spelling that sometimes occurs, as it
can lead people of this name to be missed in alphabetical lists.
Finally in the census I noted a widowed Hannah Whittle and family near to the
Coal Yard address in 1861. If she proves to be the right one I will send
details. She was born in Wigan, not Bolton, as were the remaining children,
so would have had to move twice to have had a daughter Elizabeth in Bolton.
Aaron and Elizabeth would appear to have married around 1858, so I should be
able to find a marriage entry for this in the registration indexes (which
begin in 1837), and could buy a copy certificate if you wish. The fee to
purchase one is £6.50. It would show the name and occupation of Elizabeth's
 father as well as Aaron's.
Up to 1837, all marriages, including RC ones but excluding Quakers, had to
take place at the parish church to be legal. There is a marriage at Wigan
All Saints (the parish church) which is probably that of Aaron's parents: 13
June 1824, William Arrowsmith to Frances Crank.
Also have some information from South Dakota on the families of Aaron and
Moses Arrowsmith. Am sending you a copy via snail mail as did not want to
type it all in. Will get it in the mail today.
  Take care.
 Gwen
There were two or three RC churches in Wigan at the time of Aaron's
birth and luckily the first register I tried contained his baptism. The
entries are rather brief (no address or father's occupation), and include the
 names of the godparents:
Wigan St John's RC Church: Baptized 31st, born 29th, March 1833, Aaron
Arrowsmith, son of William & Frances (GP Thomas Tyrer & Jane Dennett).
You will remember that I had found a marriage in the IGI (1824), so I looked
for other baptisms to this same couple and found:
Elizabeth Arrowsmith, born 22nd May, bap. 3rd June, 1826 (GP John & Mary
 Tyrer)
Araon [?] Harrowsmith, born 10th, bap. 18th, Nov 1828. (GP John Green &
Elizabeth Hurst; first name oddly spelled but probably an earlier Aaron who
 presumably died as an infant.)
Ellen Arrowsmith, born 23rd, bap. 27th, Feb 1831 (GP John & Ellen Arrowsmith)
Jane Arrowsmith, born 18th, bap. 20th, May 1838 (GP John & Deborah
 Arrowsmith).
John Arrowsmith, bap. 11 Feb 1844 (later register, no birth dates given; GP
 John Goulding & Elizabeth Arrowsmith).
Shortage of time prevented a check on 1841-3. I also checked the 1824
marriage, at Wigan All Saints (the parish church), but the only additional
detail was to confirm that both parties were of Wigan and the marriage was by
 banns.
Meanwhile I had found the marriage of Aaron Arrowsmith and Elizabeth Whittle
indexed in the GRO as taking place in 1856, and have ordered a copy
 certificate.
I had to go to Wigan itself to check the baptisms at the 'History Shop'
there, whereas the records of RC churches in Bolton are at Preston (the
Lancashire Record Office). On my most recent visit there I tried the largest
of the Bolton churches and was pleased to find a baptism of an Elizabeth
Whittle that may prove to be the right one (the marriage certificate should
confirm father's name when it comes).
Bolton St Peter & St Paul RC Church: Baptized 25th, born 4th, December 1836,
Elizabeth Whittle, d. of Nehemiah Whittle and Rosanna (formerly) MacCan (GP
 Thomas Roper & Ellen Goodman).
Your 'N--h' may be a contraction of Nehemiah. As I am currently dealing with
another tree where a Susannah has turned into a Hannah, I thought it possible
that Rosanna could also be alternatively Hannah, so I searched more of the
 register and found these baptisms:
Martha Whittle d. of Nehemiah Whittle and Hannah (McCann), born 24th Sept,
bap. 21st Oct, 1838 (GP Helen Dilworth & Robert Mercer)
Thomas Whittle (of) Little Bolton, s. of Nehemiah Whittle and Rosannah
(McCan), born 9th, bap. 25th, July 1841 (GP James Heywood & Miles Smith)
I searched only 1831-May 1842 (end of this register).
