He joined the Army at the onset of World War II, serving in the horse cavalry as a veterinary assistant, patrolling the border between Mexico and the U.S. When the Army moved from horses to tanks, he signed up for special duty and found himself in Helena with the famed First Special Service Force. He began a new vocation, which would shape the rest of his life. In 1954, he began working at the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office, under Dave Middlemas, and became the chief criminal deputy for this organization. He continued serving the county until Middlemas left office in the 1970s. He then worked for the Governor’s Crime Commission and moved to Bozeman to become the director of the Montana Law Enforcement Academy. He retired from the academy and then returned to Helena to enjoy his dogs, the birds and the wildlife. He was kind, firm, a storyteller not to be matched, and a man who loved all of God’s creatures.
