  Obituary - Greenville Mountaineer, Wednesday April 13, 1898: The death of Griffin Smith removes one of the oldest citizens of Anderson County. Mr. Smith died Tuesday morning [that would be 5 Apr 1898] at Piedmont. He was 79 years old and leaves six children, James, George, and Allen Smith, Mrs. Amanda Sherman, Mrs. Amelia Matthews and Mrs. Elizabeth Wilson. The cause of his death was dropsy from which he had been a sufferer for three months. Mr. Smith was for many years a member of Mountain Springs Baptist Church where the burial took place on Wednesday. The Rev. D. I. Spearman conducted the funeral services.
