Note: 1820 Census - Edgefield Co, SC; p.; 200010-20110. 1830 Census - Edgefield Co, SC; p221; 0001101000000-2121010000000. 1840 Census - Elbert Co, GA; p.162; 0000100100000-0121001000000. James first married an Unknown (first name likely Catherine per witness on 1812 will of John Baker) and had 3 children. His first wife died about 1815. He second married Ivy Rush c.1816. In the 1830 census, James and Ivy are living near other members of the Rush family - Ivy's brother Jacob Rush is recorded immediately prior to James Stiefel in the census, and her father David Rush is recorded further down on the same census page. In 1804, land was transferred to James Stiefel although the deed was not recorded until 1813. "Edgefield County, South Carolina: Deed Books 30, 31", Abstracted by Carol Wells; Heritage Books, 1999; p.142 (corrected by information from the actual deed). Conveyance Book 31, p.345; John Quattlebuam to James Steffil, Deed of Conveyance, 26 December 1804, one hundred Dollars, 100 acres on waters of Sleepy Creek and Little Stephens Creek adj lands of Jeremiah Allen, William Allen, Campbell Clegg, John Kirksey, Joseph Williams, John Quattlebaum. Wit: Stephenson Campbell, John Stevens. /s/ John Quattlebaum. Proven 27 December 1804 by John Stevens; John Blocker J.P. Rec 19 June 1813. *** It is interesting to note that the recording of this deed was just after John Quattlebaum died in 1813. A deed transferring 100 acres from John to his son George Quattlebaum was also executed on the day of his death in 1813. Finally, the land transfer deed above was executed about the time (1804) that James Stiefel married his first wife. This makes one speculate that perhaps his first wife, Catherine Unknown, was a daughter of John Quattlebaum. *** In 1806, adjacent land of James Stiefel referenced in a deed of Stephenson Campbell (Conveyance Book 28, p.156). This is the land he acquired in 1804. In 1809, James was witness to an indenture. Note that one of the parties is John Shibley who is likely his brother-in-law.
