Note: 1820 Census - Edgefield Co, SC; p.90a; 100010-20100; adjacent to David Rush. From "Family of David Rush", pp.77: Robert Etheridge Estate Admst. 9 Nov. 1829 by Wade Etheridge. His bond was signed by Joel Etheridge and David Walker. Citations as to this Estate were read first at Reedy Creek on 1 Nov. 1829 and on 5 Nov. 1829 at Rehoboth Church and both citations were signed as having been read by George Slappy. The appraisers were: Henry Zimmerman, Hugh Mosely, David Rush, James Steifle and Peter Rampey. In 1831, Mrs. Margaret Etheridge, widow of Robert Etheridge was asking that new papers for administration be made out to her and her second husband, Jesse Thornton whom she had recently married. She stated that she was the second wife of Robert Etheridge deceased and that her late husband had by his first wife but two children and that they did not live with her. These first children were listed as: David Rush Etheridge and Martha Etheridge. David R. Etheridge signed for his share in 1834. James Rampey, 3 Dec. 1836, signed for the share of his wife, Martha R. Rampey. Statements said in 1834 David R. Etheridge was now age twenty-one and in 1836 Martha Etheridge, wife of James Rampey, was aged twenty-one. These two children of Robert Etheridge were children by his first wife who was a daughter of David Rush Sr. This is proved in his Estate Settlement in 1839 when David R. Etheridge and his sister, Martha Rampey, signed for the share of their deceased mother (not named). Wade Etheridge was named Guardian Ad Litem for the minor children of Robert Etheridge deceased. Later, Mrs. Margaret Etheridge, the widow, had her second husband, Jesse Thornton, named as legal guardian for her children. The following children received their share when they became twenty-one: Eliza Etheridge in 1841; William Etheridge in 1846; James Etheridge in 1846; Elizabeth Etheridge in 1846; Mantz Etheridge in 1846; Sampson Etheridge 5 Mar. 1852; Sarah Etheridge 5 Mar. 1852; Robert Etheridge Jr. 5 Mar. 1852; and Wade Etheridge 5 Mar. 1852. Most of the children of Robert and his second wife Margaret moved to Gwinnett Co, GA. Excerpts taken from The History of Auburn and Carl, by Myldred Flanigan Hutchins. "Loy Etheridge says that five Etheridge brothers came from South Carolina and settled on both sides of the Appalachee River. They were James, who never married, moved to Arkansas and later was killed at Gettysburg; Manley had six children; William first married Caroline Willard and had one child. His second marriage was to Polly Hutchins; Sampson married Nancy Bird Betts and had eleven children; Robert Jr. married Polly Bowen and had five children; The father of these five brothers was Robert Etheridge of South Carolina. Robert Etheridge's brother, Shepherd Etheridge, was born in 1790, settled in the Ben Smith' s District. This area was part of Gwinnett County, but was lost to Barrow County in 1914. He was married three times and had fifteen children."
