 The Murder of Henry Stiefer.
As this ghastly murder occured a week back, most of our readers are pretty well acquainted with the facts by this time. Nevertheless we narrate the matter in full. Henry G Stiefer [sic, middle initial is S per probate and other records] if we mistake not, is a native of the Shatterfield section of our county. He has, or once had, a wife. He was a good soldier of the 7th Reg't, a member of Capt. J. H. Brook's company. He lost an arm in the service. For some years past he has peddled cheap dry goods, tobacco, &c., etc., through some of our upper Townships, notably Dean. These goods he lately carried in a wagon drawn by two good mules. He was in the habit of camping where night found him. For some weeks past he had had in his employ - driving his wagon - a yound negro fellow aged about twenty-one years named Wilson Stephens. The home or headquarters of this fellow was on the plantation of Henry T. Wright. Esq., four miles East of our town. His wife, child and mother still live there. On Wednesday night, the 14th instant, Stiefer and the negro camped at Herlong's Lumber Mill in Mobley Township a mile or so from the residence of James D. Watson, Esq. On Thursday morning, Stuefer was found dead, with his skull stove in. Stephens the negro man was missing. He had pulled off the dead man's shoes and left his own. The wagon and mules were unmolested. Trial Justice Waters, of Johnston, being summoned, held an inquest. Mr. J. D. Watson was foreman of the jury. Stiefer was a first cousin of Mr. J. H. Lowrey of Elmwood, and to his residence the dead body, the wagon, mules and goods were taken. The body was decently interred at Sleepy Creek Church. Stephens was arrested at Mr. H. T. Wright's on Friday by Messrs L. A. Rodgers and John Buzzard, and by them brought and lodged in our jail. He has confessed the deed, and says that often before he had risen at night to do it, but his heart failed him. He smote the sleeping man on the head with one of the wagon standards. Money was his object, but according to his own statement, a statement he persistently adheres to, he got only 87 cents - in an old pocket book. His mother or wife subsequently produced the pocket book and 87 cents, and declared it was all he gave into their possession. The body was examined for money before burial, but not a penny was found. It now seems, from the reports of persons who knew Stiefer's habits, that he carried his money in a pocket on the inner side of his drawers, and that he often needlessly and ostentatiously exhibited his money. There is a strong probability, therefore, that he has been buried with his money on his person. We hear that he has a brother, a rich man, in Abbeville County [this would be James T Steifle], and two sisters in Edgefield somewhere [these are Katherine and Martha who were living and working in Graniteville at this time]. He was about fifty years of age. Wilson Stephens is in our jail, and is, we believe, beginning to try the exhausted dodge of insanity. In our opinions Messrs. Rodgers and Buzzard deserve a reward for their prompt and persistent persuit of this ruthless murderer. And indeed there ought to be a law on our statute book rewarding the men who overtake such evil doers. It would restrain much crime.
Wilson Stevens was found guilty and hanged at Edgefield Court House on 1 Aug 1884.
Estate record - Edgefield Co, SC; Box 111, Pack 4518. Administrator: Eliz'th Steefer.
