Richard Dent's Marriages
Richard's first marriage is very sad. Having married Mary Robinson in August 1893 in London, they returned to Kendal where Mary contracted scarlet fever and died only three months after their marriage. It appears that although he had previously lived in London, he had returned to Kendal prior to the wedding and then returned to London specifically to marry Mary. (His address on the marriage certificate shows him residing at 39 Branthwaite Brow, Kendal.)
He later married Eleanor Baker in 1899, it appears that this marriage for whatever reason did not last - there is no record of her death or a divorce in the indexes. Equally there is no record of his marriage to Emma Barrett (Who had his children) or to 'Mrs J. Dent' with whom he lived at the time of his death.
He would not have been able to lawfully marry these two ladies if Eleanor Baker was still alive and could be the reason why there are no records of marriage to them. His daughter May Lilian (my aunt) told me that his last wife (Mrs J. Dent) looked after and cared for him until his death in 1940.
Richard was buried at East Finchley Cemetery in grave no. 23080 in Section K. This apparently is a mass grave according to the cemetery officials. This is because at that time, during World War 2, London was being bombed and there were many casualties, too many to be buried in individual graves.
[Since peter wrote the above i have found not only the marriage to the mentioned j dent above she being Josephine
Hammerslag but also a marriage to fanny elizabeth dixon who died 14mts. after their marriage in 1895. so that means of the 5 relationships he had 3 of the women died and one marriage failed]
