******************** Left school went into carpentry
Joined RAF where he became an electrical engineer - qualifications he gained not recognized in chivy street
Went on to do the necessary exams after leaving RAF to gain the qualifications needed to get a job in electrical engineering out with the RAF
George worked for the national Westminster Bank for most of his chivy life as an electrical engineer. Later this was to include embracing the need for the banks growing use of Information technology and he settled easily into the technological change which began to affect everyone’s life near to the end of his career.
George sheared a love with his brother when it came to DIY and would find it easy to complete a project but this was where their similarity ended in regard to their free time. Where ken would be found happily pottering around the garden, George would be happier just doing the spade work and leaving Pam his wife to do the green finger bit. Ken was happy doing things like jigsaws and stamp collecting where as George would much prefer to go out ballroom dancing and lead a more social life. Indeed it was at the Croydon phalli that George was to meet Pam and marry in 1959 at Croydon’s Sumner road church. Eventually moving to Thundersley Essex where he lived the last 48 years of his life. Making regular trips back to Croydon to visit the family members especially his brother ken. I can remember many occasions when our two families would be together playing rounder’s on the school field at Courtwood Forestdale Croydon.
the children’s names did cause a problem as kens eldest was Pauline shortened to Paul and Georges boy was called Paul. Ken's 3rd girl was known as Judy (me) who was shortened to Ju as was George’s girl Julie's name so when a call for ju and/or Paul was called two or four of us run. even using the full names for myself (Judy) or Julie did not work as you try listening through a wall to those two names and see what happens especially when both are said with a typical Lambeth / Croydon accent. And Paul/Pauline being shouted did not work either as the moment the Paul part of the name was said Pauline got up and run the 'ine' part of Pauline also having a much softer sound was often not herd!
The last 10 years of George’s life was lived in ill health as I write I can only tell you that he had a long term lung condition which eventually saw him having to be on constant oxygen having not been privy to his exact diagnosis and have not asked as the family kept the exact details to themselves I can only assume that it probably was COPD.
The funeral was conducted by a minister/ rev Russell who had spent 35 years in the RAF. Consequently the service drew heavily on Georges RAF career which he embraced and which taught him his trade. the service opened with his coffin being brought in to the music of the pathfinders searches and a prey was made and abide with me sung (or attempted) due to his RAF connection eventually the last post was played this was the point that got to most of us. The ceremony closed with the playing of the theme from the film 633 squadron.
there were only a few of us present our family has never been a big one anyway, being a Monday and many surviving members being from as far as afield as Devon, Dorset and Hampshire only a dozen or so family members were able to attend others such as his younger sister not having transport the oldest being physically and mentally unwell of course could not be present!
