We normally ask people to use our Historical Research Service, details of which can be found on our website at www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives. You can follow the links to our research service and download an application form. On this one occasion, however, I have been able to have a look through the Kendal register for the baptism of James Dent. The marriage register entry of 1846 shows him of full age and Sarah as a minor, which, as they were so close in age according to the census, made me believe he was only just 21. This in fact proved to be the case and, although I checked 1826 and 27, I also checked 1825 and found the following entry. Page 237 Entry No. 1895 11th September 1825 James son of John and Elizabeth Dent of Fellside Kendal, a waller, baptised by J. Fawcett, Curate. Im afraid I do not have the time to solve your mystery but I can suggest the following theory: John Dent, the father of James, died before the marriage of his son in 1846. I have found the burial on 26th November 1831 of a John Dent, weaver of Hallow Lane Kendal aged 66 years, which would make him born about 1765. His widow Elizabeth, as she is considerably younger, possibly only 48, then married Benjamin Robinson between 1836 and 1842, probably between 1836 and the census of 1841. Benjamin dies in 1842 and Elizabeth then lives the remainder of her life as a widow, looking after her grandson John in 1851, for her son and daughter-in-law who have recently had a daughter, Elenor. This theory, and I must emphasise it is only that, fits all the facts that you have given. I can thoroughly recommend our Research Service and hope that you are able to use it. We will not be able to do any more work on your behalf through this department as I have already spent far in excess of what we normally do. I hope this information helps your research.
