Note: Births Jun 1869 WESTBROOK Alice Alton 2c 139 there is no christening listed in wield regs the pages covering 1863 to 1872 of the mitcheldiver primitive methodists (andover cuircit) are non eisistant. i have looked at the original parish records both for st james church and the above mentioned. there are no more christenings after 1865 for any of james and charlottes children in st james. the mitcheldiver primitive methodists (andover cuircit) which i have also seen has an entry in 1863 which is imeditly followed by an entry for 1872 with no sign of pages missing from the book itself. the first christening for james and charlottes children in the mitcheldiver primitive methodists (andover cuircit) was urbans so this means that 3 christenings, amy, alice and arthurs, have to date remained elusive. ******************** 1871census Name Age in 1871 Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island Robert S Knight 10 Wield, Hampshire, England Son Wield Hampshire Alice Westbrook 2 Wield, Hampshire, England Daughter WieldHampshire Amy Westbrook 4 Wield, Hampshire, England Daughter Wield Hampshire Annie Westbrook 8 Wield, Hampshire, England Daughter Wield Hampshire Arthur Wm Westbrook 1 Wield, Hampshire, England Son Wield Hampshire Charlotte Westbrook 30 Wield, Hampshire, England Wife Wield Hampshire Elizh Westbrook 6 Wield, Hampshire, England Daughter Wield Hampshire Jas Westbrook 31 Wield, Hampshire, England Head Wield Hampshire ******************** 1881census Name Estimated Birth Year Birthplace Relationship Residence Alice Westbrook abt 1865 Wield, Hampshire, England Daughter Wield Arthor Westbrook abt 1871 Wield, Hampshire, England Son Wield Charlotte Westbrook abt 1842 Wield, Hampshire, England Wife Wield James Westbrook abt 1841 Wield, Hampshire, England Head Wield Kate Westbrook abt 1877 Wield, Hampshire, England Daughter Wield Urben Westbrook abt 1874 Wield, Hampshire, England Son Wield Walter Westbrook abt 1880 Wield, Hampshire, England Son Wield ******************** Marriages Mar 1889 Francis Christopher Croydon 2a 399 WESTBROOK Alice Croydon 2a 399 ******************** 1891census Name Age in 1891 Birthplace Relationship to head-of-house Civil parish County Phillips, Ada 22 Lambeth, London Daughter Croydon Surrey Phillips, Mary 46 St Georges, London Wife Croydon Surrey Phillips, Thomas 85 Sonning, Berkshire Head Croydon Surrey Phillips, Thomas E 50 Camberwell, London Son Croydon Surrey Thompson, Emma 21 Bow, London Visitor Croydon Surrey Westbrook, Kate 16 Hampshire / Hantshaving Servant Croydon Surrey Francis, Alsie 22 Hampshire / Hantshaving Servant Croydon Surrey ******************** 1901census Name Age in 1901 Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island Edith Cutting 21 Stowupland, Suffolk, England Servant St Margaret Suffolk Alice Faux 32 Upper Wield, Hampshire, England Wife St Margaret Suffolk Arthur V Faux 3 Thornton Heath, Surrey, England Son St Margaret Suffolk Francis C Faux 35 Basingstoke, Hampshire, England Head St Margaret Suffolk William Faux 11 Croydon, Surrey, England Son St Margaret Suffolk ******************** 1911 CENSUS FAUX ALICE F 1869 42 Ormskirk Lancashire FAUX ARTHUR VERNON M 1898 13 Ormskirk Lancashire FAUX FRANCIS CHRISTOPHER M 1866 45 Ormskirk Lancashire FAUX FRANCIS REGINALD M 1903 8 Ormskirk Lancashire ******************** England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2005 Name: Alice Faux Death Registration Month/Year: Apr-May-Jun 1953 Age at death (estimated): 83 Registration district: Liverpool South Inferred County: Lancashire Volume: 10d Page: 482 29 / 8 / 03 the entry on familysearch 1881 census has Alice as age 16 .I have checked the entry in the GRO and it says she is aged 12 who ever done the transcribing made a mistake. 17 / 2 /2004 I found her marriage in March 1889 to a Christopher Francis. It turns out this must have been without consent as I then checked the 1891 /1901 but could not find them but a Alice faux came up with a Francis age 35 and a William aged 11 born in Croydon in the 1901. So I looked for both in the 1891.francis faux was listed as SINGLE aged 25 living with his parents and siblings in new Malden surrey. I then found William listed as a Francis aged 1 with Robert knight Alice’s oldest brother at Queen's road Croydon. The conformation came when I found Alice as a Francis living with her sister Kate and both servants and she listed as married in Woodside Croydon just down the road from her son. June 2005 Have confirmed the marriage with Alice’s great grandson christopher jary who writes................. One of their servants was a maid called Alice Westbrook. Alice had been born in March 1869, the fourth child of a woodman's laborer, in Wield, near Alresford in Hampshire. Neither her father, James, nor her mother, Charlotte, could read or write. Alice was the one of the first village children to receive an elementary schooling before entering domestic service in her teens. In 1888 the reaction at Fairmead to their (FRANCIS) twenty-two-year-old son's love for one of their maids was predictably savage. The self-educated Fauxes were still close enough to their own undistinguished origins to be rawly sensitive to the prospect of regression. Their horror would have been increased because their steady social and economic progress had been built on literacy: their own and that of the readers of the books they sold (at w.h.smiths). Their oldest son should not be allowed to marry into the family of an illiterate laborer. But they failed. Kit (FRANCIS) left Fairmead, installed Alice in a terraced house in Union Road, Croydon, and, under the assumed name of Christopher Francis, married her in March 1889. Bill was born nearly six months later. Curiously in the circumstances, they christened him William James Christopher, commemorating first the grandfather who had exiled them and only then his other grandfather and father. words by christopher jary cmandl.jary@btinternet.com ..
