father occ on marriage was fret cutter
simply put, frets are holes. a fret cutter would cut holes in metals or woods for either decoration or to allow flow of air. a common type of fret is dealing with musical instruments. Violin, cello, bass, all have solid backs and edges, but on the top face there are fancy holes that look like "S". They are sound holes that allow for the sound to come from inside and amplify on the outside. another kind of fret is dealing with the necks of guitars. as simple as it looks, the dark strip of wood on the guitar neck is actually cut with slits; that strip of wood is the fret board where you finger or press the strings to change notes. taking several styles and making a fancy cut out pattern on a plain sheet of wood or metal is called fret work. there can be several layers or multiple patterns involved. overall, the trade is found in carpentry, jewelers, and trades that usually require skills and apprentice training. by ancestry user lafull1
