He had been born in August 1889, an early product of the unexpected union of Francis Christopher "Kit" Faux and Alice Westbrook. But both his birth certificate and his parents' marriage certificate said otherwise. On these documents, his father's name was given as Christopher Francis and his grandfather's as "William Francis deceased". In truth, there was no William Francis. There was, however, a William Faux, after whom Bill was named. But he was still very much alive.
